Ignition Timing

Does anyone know which tower on the distributor cap is no. 1 cylinder on a 1988 c1500 4.3L? I've just installed a remanufactured engine and can't get it to start. I've seen conflicting pictures on which tower number 1 is at. Thanks in advance.

Re: Ignition Timing

Pull the #1 plug. Put your finger over the spark plug hole and rotate the engine until you feel compression on the #1 cylinder. Then line up the timing mark to 0 degrees. Pull the cap and the rotor will be pointing to #1.

If nothing has changed, the No 1 position on the dist is pointing directly at the TBI.

Thanks guys! Got it running today and dead nuts in time. The other thing I can't figure out is why it has a high idle. Anyone have any suggestions? It runs great, just a high idle.

Did you disconnect the EST when you set the timing? I would check for vacuum leaks since that will cause a high idle. The TBI gasket is prone to leaking, so make sure you check that.

Yes I did disconnect the EST while timing and reconnected, and I installed a new TBI gasket. I have looked for vacuum leaks. Not too many vacuum lines on this truck, but I'll take a better look today. Thanks.

Thanks for all your help 2000CAYukon. Just wanted to let you know it's running great now. I feel like an idiot...I didn't reconnect the idol control stepper motor. Once I did reconnect it, it runs like a champ. I've got a fresh truck now. Thanks again!
