Switching gear problem
When I'm stopped at an intersection and then I go and my gears shift really quick sometimes I'm in third gear before I leave the intersction at 35 mph. Is their a way to change the gear ratios and make the gears stay longer before switching. any help would be nice. It doesn't switch fast if I gun it of course.

Re: Switching gear problem
im guessing its an automatic, only way i know of to make the gear shifts take longer is to put shorter rear gears in it, like 2.73 gears. The automatic is designed to shift when its supposed to, to i wouldnt worry about it.

Re: Switching gear problem
well you could mess with the tv cable and it will make it shift harder and at a higher point, if thats what you are looking for...but i dont know how good that is for your tranny.

Re: Switching gear problem
nope and nope. Using/Adjusting the TV cable can/will cause severe damage to the trans. That cable is used for setting line pressure off idle and not for shift points.
Shorter rear end gears will cause a significant loss of low end torque and speed/power. The governor (in the trans) sets the shift points in the 700r4 transmission. you can add/remove/change the springs in order to change the shift points. stiffer springs delay the shifts, lighter springs make it shift quicker. Also removing (one or both of the) springs will make it shift quicker. It may have popped out, or someone may have removed/lost it. the governor is behind a rounded cover on the driver side rear of the transmission. it is the rounded cover at the rearmost of the transmission. the cover pops out by prying it with a screwdriver. Easy install. go here http://transmissionhead.com/ and look at part #43.

Re: Switching gear problem
get a PROM burned and change the shift points and properties. (When I just got my tuning done I had allt aht reprogrammed, I don't see why a 3rd gen wouldn't be able to either)

Re: Switching gear problem
check your tranny fluid.. is it clean and at the proper level? 3rd gear at 35mph isnt unreasonable.. as long as the TV cable is adjusted properly, your tranny will shift at the optimum points for efficiency, (which is a good thing with the price of fuel) except at WOT of course ..
No, you cannot get a prom burned to change shift points.. the 700R4 is Not electronic, therefor Not programable by any means.. If your looking for a little more holding power, and snappier shifts.. Look at installing a corvette 1-2 servo (about 20 bucks) OR a street shift kit.. if you want shifts that are fast and hard, and a little farther down the rpm line, install both the servo and shift kit.. btw.. make sure your starting out with a good strong tranny before you start modding it.. burnt or missing tranny fluid could indicate a problem within the tranny These mods also cause added stress on your rear end and your neck..

Re: Switching gear problem
a good band m strip kit will help u it will make it asnappier shift and save your clutches in the tranny too and the good kit can be ordered from advace for 69 bucks and takes about a hour to put in and it easy if you can read but of course you will have to buy fluid and might as well buy a filter kit

personally I would like the quicker part throttle shifts. Your gas mileage will be a little better because of it... especially if you do a lot of stop ang go driving. I was thinking about making mine shift just like yours is. it would be annoying if you didn't have enough low end power and it made your engine bog down all the time, though.

Re: Switching gear problem
but if cables are stretched from age it helps to know the shift points to keep it right the setting of the cable might be altered and fish weights work to fix that
