Unhappy 1991 lumina-HELP

Car will not start. Sounds like it wants to start but nothing. I was told maybe it could be the emergency fuel shut off switch since my daughter ran over a stump, and hit the bottome of the car. Can anyone please advise me as to were that switch is located on this car, most cars have it in the trunk by the gas tank. Any information will help. Daughter uses this car for work and now is on her own at 19 yrs old, she bought this car on her own.

These cars, as far as I know, are not equipped with a cutoff. Check fuel pressure at the rail, the bump may have damaged the pump or caused sludge to clog the strainer. Check that and/or wiggle the wires. But no, no cutoff switch.

GM doesn't use an inertia switch like Ford. Like Cad said, check for fuel tank damage, see if it looks like the fuel lines got pinched or wiring seperated.

Is it still hung up where it ran over the stump, or was it running after?

The car ran for about 5 miles or so, she turned off the car and never could start it again. We sprayed starter fuild into the intake and the car started for a few seconds, then shut off.

I had one in the shop once with a similar deal, had run off the road and bottomed out, then got home and wouldn't run. Towed it to the shop, and she had bent the gas tank in a way that caused it to be real shallow around the pickup, and when she parked angled up in the driveway, there was no fuel available to the pump.

She never got the tank repaired, just couldn't run it under 1/8 tank afterwards.

Re: 1991 lumina auto fuel shut off switch?????

Listen under the car when someone turns the key on, you should hear the pump in the tank run about 2-3 seconds to pressurize the system.

Look on the fuel rail on top of the motor, there is a service port that may have a plastic cap, under it is a valve just like on a tire. Carefully press on the core, just like letting air out of a tire. If it is pressurized, gas will blast outta there (watch your eyes). If you get a small spit or nothing, you either aren't reaching gas, or the pump may have died if the tank got knocked hard.

How much gas is in it?

If you think the situation I described at the top might apply, and it's low, put a couple of gallons in it.

Here is the service port on mine (97) yours may be in a different location on the rail, but will look the same.
