6.0 Fuel Economy

Hello all, I recently traded in my 2000 Chevy Silverado half ton for a 2002 3/4 ton with the 6.0 engine. With the dual flowmasters I'm getting around 14 miles a gallon. I was wondering if any of you pros have any tips for improving fuel economy as well as horsepower. I know about the K and N intake kits and the programmers but with som much to choose from what do you fellas think about some of the products out there?

Thanks and keep on truckin!

Re: 6.0 Fuel Economy

First on all, your not getting 14 miles to the gallon with the 6.0 in a 3/4 ton, your getting 9 city and 12 highway, also an intake uses more fuel rather than less. The onlt real way to improve fuel ecomony is a hypertech programmer.

What's up Ars? Just want to make sure we all caught your post?

Why don't you believe his 14 mpg claim? I get 14 comined with my 9200 GVWR 6.0 HD with 4.10's driving like I want to. If his is a 8600 GVWR 2500 he's probably got 3.73's which should be netting AT LEAST 14 mpg. If I were getting 9/12, I'd sell it.

Bears, if you figure out a good may to boost your milage with your 6.0, let me know. They aren't known for their fuel economy...

Ars,

How do you know exactly what fuel mileage he is getting? Do you ride with this guy every day? Fuel economy changes from vehicle to vehicle and location to location not to mention driver technique.
Also, in my opinion, an aftermarket intake that allows more air to the engine will be more efficient and would not have a negative inpact on fuel economy. I know my MAC intake certainly did not hurt my gas mileage.

Thanks guys for all of your responses! Yes, I certainly do get ate least 14 mpg with the 6.0 Also, I have heard that the intake kit only adds to the fuel economy and the horsepower. Does the programmer add more stress to the engine? Does the programmer consume more fuel? Thanks fellas!

yeah... call 210-626-0278 - Nelson Performance. Talk to allen, and tell him you need a gas mileage tuned PCM for your truck http://www.nelsonperformance.com. You also might change your engine oil to Royal Purple or Amsoil. Those let the engine move a little more freely and help boost MPG.

Yeah, I ordered mine in the mail. The hypertech and superchips cost almost the same. Allen does a lot more than those things can do (i.e. they have limited functions)

Keep your foot out of it

Seriously, you may be getting slightly better milage than you think. Your odometer is slowed down due to the taller tires, showing less mpg. If you haven't altered it with a programmer, you'll need to calculate the discrepancy. Your new tires are nearly 2.5" taller than the 245's, and you are really going over 70 mph when your speedo reads 65. Here's a link and there are many more sites.

Punisher, the real question is....are you happy w/the truck? I have a K2500HD 6.0L and depending on the conditions and myself, I get between 12 to 16 mpg. (Yes, I once got 16 mpg!!!) I had a 1981 Ford F-150 w/the 300 and only got 13.5 at best. But I loved that old truck. So, the question is.......are you happy with the truck?
