What are the signs of a bent valve, other than taking about the motor and looking. what performance/riding characteristics come with a bent valve?

Y'all break a timing belt? A bent valve would likely cause little or no compression in the cylinder. The engine would have a miss and a lack of power. You could also detect the reduced compression with a (ta-da) compression tester.

Trouble is that there are a number of reasons for low compression besides a bent valve. In other words, good compression means that you don't have a bent valve, but poor compression only means that you MAY have a bent valve.

Unfortuneatly the one way to be sure is dissassembly. If you give us more details about the whats and the whys, we may be able to advise you better.
