transmission 2nd & 4th gone

i have been doing alot of reading and have yet to determine what this might be. i just bought a 1995 k1500 z71. it has 124K on the odometer. the problem i have is that you have to accelerate 1st up to a high rpm and then let off. then it will jump inot 3rd. it never goes into 4th unless you are going at a decent speed and then you let off of the gas. the rpms will drop pretty low but as soon as you apply some pedal it kicks back to 3rd. i was told when i bought the truck that it was a sensor (vss?). i read on here that replacing this fixed this problem. i haven't bought one yet because after reading all the different threads, i don't know if that is really what it is. i have the 4l60e transmission. i have seen that people have lots of problems with this trans. has there not been a recall to fix this? can the best of the best put their heads together and let me know what the problem is? and what can i do to make this problem not come back? i read about using a vette servo, i see rebuild kits that boost that they are severe duty or super duty rebuid kits.
also i bought a hayes book and when i looked to replace the vss it didn't show one for the 4x4 truck. i noticed that there are two plugs in my trans. does anybody know which one i need to take off if i need to?
i have created a challenge now lets see who guesses correctly.
oh yes one more thing. the service engine light does not come on. but i did jumper it and did not get any codes other than the initiall 12 diagnostics mode code.

i left another part out that might help solve the problem. my abs light stays on. i haven't tried to see if the abs still works. i say this because i saw another thread from someone that had the same problem and someone asked if he still had abs. said somethig about aground wire for the trans that can be causing the problem.

the latest on my search for what is wrong. i checked the vss and got no voltage. i checked for resistance. wide open. i then kept it unpluged and drove around. i had no speedo and now it won't change from 1st at all. so is this a sign that my vss is good or bad? if you unplug it, is it suppose to stay in 1st? when i kep it plugged, i have my speedo but have to go from 1st to 3rd.
also i have been looking at the vss compared to what i saw in the store. i have a 95 k1500 z71, does anybody have a pic as to what it should look like?

ok now i am really confused. i found my speed sensor but advance auo parts is calling it an abs speed sensor transfer case mounted. is this my vss or have i got the wrong component?
