A/C condenser removal?

I may need to remove my a/c condenser to clean out the fins (and also inspect the radiator). There is some debris stuck in the fins that I can't get with a hose while it's mounted in the car. Is there anything I need to know about removing the a/c lines? Will I need to replace the refrigerant when I'm done? (I have zero experience with a/c systems)

My Durango runs hot while driving in hot (85+) weather. The hotter the outside temp the hotter the engine runs, and using the a/c makes it overheat. So far I have replaced the tstat (twice), flushed the coolant, bled the air, replaced the radiator cap, replaced the fan clutch, and hosed out the radiator and a/c condenser grills. The a/c fan and temp sending unit are both working properly. Is there anything else I should try before removing and cleaning the condenser?

Thanks!

Re: A/C condenser removal?

I don't want to insult your intelligence, but gotta ask the simple questions first, so don't take it the wrong way!

1. Not leaking any coolant, right? Especially around the water pump?
2. Serpentine belt not slipping, right?
3. No wobble in water pump/fan blades?

I'm sure you've checked all these.

As to pulling the condenser, I'd try something easier first, since the ac system is under high pressure it can be dangerous, plus you'll lose your refrigerant and oil charge if you just disconnect it.

You're probably having trouble blasting the condenser fins clean, because you can only blast from the front. Since the condenser sits in front of the radiator, I would leave the condenser in place, remove the radiator instead, which is much easier (and maybe remove the fan blades). Then try blasting from the engine side of the condenser. Maybe even use a pressure washer if you can angle it in place or use an angled tip. Also blast the radiator from both directions.

The only other thing that comes to mind is the water pump impeller might be worn or some such thing, not delivering enough flow, but that's pretty remote.

Good luck.
Keep us informed.
