Electrical Problems... Help Please!
I've got a 2000 Camaro v6 w/automatic, 71,000 miles with an electrical problem that has got me puzzled. For the last couple of years I've noticed that when I put my brakes on, the lights will dim significantly and the RPMs will drop to almost nothing for just a second then back to normal again. The mechanic says the alternator checks ok but he couldn't fix the problem until something quits working. I recently replaced the battery and the problem is still there, but it seems more noticeable. Now it seems the same thing happens even when I just take my foot off the accelerator. I'd like to finally fix this problem before I get stranded on the road somewhere.
I sure hope someone can help! Thanks, John |

welcome John!
I am NO expert!! But it sounds like a short. Maybe check the wires to your brake lights for continuity? (I say that because of your statement that it started with the brakes and then got worse...) Anyway, I hope it is easily found and repaired. good luck!! Jack

Re: Electrical Problems... Help Please!
Sounds like a short or crossed wiring. When you say the rpm's drop, is it just the tach dipping, or does the engine actually slow down?

Thanks for your replies.
OK, I've got something to look for now.... a short or crossed wiring. Is this something a good mechanic should be able to find fairly easily or will it take alot of work. BTW... the engine does slow down with the tach. Thanks again! |
