Water Pump is shot...

Well I bought a 94' Z28 yesterday...and wouldn't ya know it...the water pump blew today. I'm pissed. Anyway, I'll live...but I was wondering if I did the right thing afterwords... I bought the pump from Pep Boys for $142 (brand new, not rebuilt)..bought a thermostat and gauge to go with it...and a new Serpentine belt for 22 bucks.

My neighbor's a mechanic and he's installin everything (pump, belt, thermostat, guages) for 100 bucks...R&S Strauss wanted to charge me 500+ for pump and installation.

Just wondering how I did...and if anyone would have done anything differently.

Re: Water Pump is shot...

That sounds reasonable. Im guessing the only other thing you could have done was gotten a better pump but Im not even sure about that.

Yea I believe there was a high performance pump available from Pep Boys...but I'm guessing it was more expensive.

you can install the pump, thermostat, and belt yourself, it doesnt require any expensive tools... $500 for that is a crime. thats why i hate strauss/auto zone/pep boys...

Yea, absolute highway robbery. I want to at least make sure it's done right, so I don't mind the extra 100, I'll probably watch him install it so I know how to do it for future reference. For me to install that at this point would be like sending someone into a gunfight with a knife.

Re: Water Pump is shot...

Better hope the Opti did not get too wet when the pump quit (should have leaked right on it through the weepole). The leading cause of Opti failure is probably water pump failure....
