1984 300 zx question

I just bought this car and replaced the clutch. I was told that was the only problem but it was not. When I try to put it into 1st gear it seem like it wont go all the way in. It only goes into 5th and reverse. The other gears make a kind of grinding noise. I am hoping this is not a tranny problem but mabye just my gear shifter box. Please help. Manual 5 speed transmission

Re: 1984 300 zx question

Sounds like your syncros are bad. Unfortunatly, that would qualify as a "tranny problem". I don't think it's any HUGE deal to fix, but I don't think it's exactly a quicky fix, either.

However...have you checked your clutch slave cylinder? Had that go bad once and it wouldn't let me into gears, either. Will it go into gear when the car's off? The slave cylinder IS a quicky fix. Pray it's that, dude...

if it was the slave cylinder though it wouldnt just let him go into just 2 gears and not the others it would react the same with all the gears

Not necessarily. Besides, he said it would only let him into 5th and reverse.

Re: 1984 300 zx question

sounds like the slave
the tranny in 5th wouldnt have as much resistance a sin other gears and onse the inertia is stopped it is still stopped when you go from 5th to rev.
but when you go back to 1st the inertia of the engine starts to spin the pressure plate again and its spinning so you cant engage it
good luck
