turbo... dilemma!
i don't know what to do. i want a turbo. no matter what. my original plans were to swap a b18c1 build it and turbo it with a drag gen 3 kit. now my plans may change. should i just bite the bullet and turbo my sohc d16? if i do this, what can i run on stock internals? 7psi? and what gains can i expect if i do this.
the only reason for this is that i am 17 and still only working part time and the money i'll need for a b18 + turbo + buildup + LABOR because i cant do it all myself and i can see maybe i'll do a swap/buildup when i'm 18-25 and/or out of college if i choose to go. so when i get a real job, i'll do what i can to get my car good. but i can't plan on having a 95 for too long. bah what would you do? i want a daily driven, relieable, turbo civic. with ability to MOVE, but it doesnt need to run 11's... yet

Most of the veterans of the scene will always advise the young guns to swap in a more capable B or H series motor first, then turbo. However, if you are really set on turbo, then just do it. You can run 6 to 7 psi if you tune carefully and drive it responsibly. It'll all be part of your learning experience, and whether it actually comes to pass or not, plan on swapping out your engine in a couple years, either for a larger twin cam, or just to rebuild your D16 after your turbo has wracked your bottom end. Even if you have bad luck with your turbo, and your engine meets a quick, early demise, you will still learn from the experience, and you'll find a way to make it through whatever happens. Don't be afraid of this, or the "I told you so's."

i'd love to be able to experiment and learn new things, but i need my car. school, work, play... etc. so it's not like i can just park it for months on end while i save for a new motor and just walk where i need to go. i cant just blow my d16 and then poof be on the road. it will be a long process. a turbo eclipse tore me a new asshole on the highway on saturday. i was doing a buck 30 basically maxed out because my car wasn't pulling much more. and the damn turbo eclipse was still moving ahead of me. yea i had 2 passengers, but i doubt that makes the difference.
right now, i think i might just get the drag kit and then save for a new motor. and i'l be very nice with the boost @ 5 or 6. but tuning.. how do i tune? does the kit come with turbo timer or boost controller? and how hard to wire these? and installation of turbo itself? and say i do buy the drag kit for the d16.. how will i be able to swap it onto my b18 motor? they sell different drag kits. i guess mounting stuff or what? thanks

as far as a 17yr old, you got a nice car so far. I feel ya on the money+school issue though. I was in the same dilema that your in right now, after I graduated I had enough saved up and bought a fairly nice integra but insurance and lack of income are killing me and I hardley have any money to spend on my car. So as soon as spring comes I'm replacing a few maintenece parts and am going to sell it and use the money to fund a turbo hybrid project. I don't suggest selling your car but know what you want to do ahead of time, Put into perspective the cost of things, can you can really afford it? and most of all make connections with locals, give a favor, get a favor it deffiently helps!
the turbo D16 isn't that bad of a set up, you can check out more info here: http://pub19.ezboard.com/fturbod16forumturbod16

Do the swap. Cause if you turbo your D16, you'll be like, "this is it?" You'll be kicking youself. Save for the swap, you'll be fast, then you can save for turbo and be even faster.
Of course, what do I know. If you want a turbo, and got the money, then do it. |

Hey man...I fell you on the turbo thing...I have a 93 DX...1.5L NON VTEC...and i`m curious to see what it can do...i already have a turbo ( Garrett T-3 )...I just don`t have everything I need to put it in yet...cause my DX is my daily driver too, and if I don`t have a way to work i`m screwed ( the military doesn`t take too lightly on not showing up for work ) so I can see where you`re coming from with the whole school-work-play thing....I`m in the same boat. The only thing i can say is...don`t give up hope....it may take time but you`ll get your car to where you want it to be. I`m 21 and just waiting for the day when I can whoop the shit out of somebody with a highly modded car ....and they`ll see the DX badge still on my car and just be embarresed. :frog:

If you ask me, i think that you should turbo the SOHC. I have installed turbos on them and they actually are pretty reliable. One that i have doen has a drag gen 3 with a complete fuel sustem and accel engine management. The car has done about 15 passes at the drag strip running 12 psi of boost on stock internals. The car is a daily driver and is completely reliable. it will be very hard for you to blow your motor if you run 6-7 psi. Just make sure your air fuel is tuned correctly. I recomend finding a very good mechanic that knows how to tune turbo motors.
