Sloppy ignition key cylinder

On my '96 pile of junk star, the ignition key switch acts like its worn out. How hard is this to change? I've already done the multi-function switch so I know how to get the column covers off. This is not the kind with the security chip in the key. Does the lock cylinder portion come separate from the electrical part? Or should I replace both. I don't care if I end up having a different key for the ignition than the doors.

I tried making a new key, not by copying the old worn out one, but using a key that I got when the van was new and put away for safe keeping. It helped but still have problems, such as the chime will sound even after the ignition is turned off and the key removed, have to put key back in and rattle around a bit then pull out and it will stop. Also sometimes it will get stuck in the Start position won't flip back to Run without a little help.

Generally the lock cylinder is separate from the electrical parts. On most vehicles the lock cylinder throws an actuating rod along the steering column to a switch box lower down.
Cylinders do wear out, you may want to change it, but keep the old key, it will become your door key unless you can have a locksmith rekey the new cylinder. Make sure the rod isn't binding somewhere.
As to removal, consult your shop manual as I have not worked on an airbag equipped vehicle.

You can get a replacement lock cylinder from Ford for less than 50.00. Here's the deal: The front part of the key is the part that unlocks the ignition. The back part of the key opens the doors. There are aprox 3 or 4 different keys. Bring your key to the parts dept. and they'll set you up with the corect cylinder.

To get the old cylinder out: Have the key in the cylinder, there is a hole in the collum under the cylinder that you will stick a slender object up and push the release on the cylinder. I forget what position the cylinder needs to be. The parts guy might be able to help you out.

Mind is so bad I can pull the key out when it's started - I kind of like it though!
