A Selection of my Best

hey guys,

i've never really made many posts in here yet, but i thoroughly enjoy photography and i'm actually considering going to school for it.

so i thought i'd sift through my collection and post up some of what i thought were my best shots, and see what you guys thought of them.

any and all input is welcomed and appreciated.

Life-guard tower on Long Beach:

Fishing trip to Northern Ontario:

House fire on my street:

Lighthouse in Kingcardine, Ontario:

My front garden:

Ottawa:

this one is a weird light fixture in the mall in Ottawa.

the Eternal Flame with the Parliament Buildings in the background.

Logan Airport in Boston:

My Trip to Ireland:

a table inside a restaurant in downtown Ennis, Ireland.

an Irish lane, in downtown Ennis.

the Cliffs of Moher.

Quinn Abbey in Quinn, Ireland:

Logan airport... *SHUDDER*

A fan of monochromes, I see! Any particular reason?

Also, the third photo of the cliffs - with the fort - is my favorite. Excellent shot

for that shot, i actually climbed over the fence and was sitting in a grassy knoll...about 4.5 feet from the edge of one of the sheer, 800-foot high cliffs. my dad was on the other side of the fence, freaking out because he thought i was going to fall.

I couldn't have done that if I tried,
Especially since I'd have to leave my room first,

Excellent work, yes you should look into selling some of those, or look into photography school or some kind of a profession involving your talent, amazing eye,
The tulip in your front garden, amazing color,
What kind of camera are you using?

Breathtaking photos! I'm with -Davo on this one,

it's a plain old run-of-the-mill Canon Powershot A70. no lenses, no modifications, no alterations with photo-shop or anything. just straight from the camera.

thanks for the comments.

Re: A Selection of my Best

#1 is very good, wire at the top is a big detractor
#2 not enough drawing your eye in
#3 very good, too much clutter in lower left quadrant
#4 good, pole and railing clutter
#5 good, but not spectacular
#6 not unique enough
#7 too cluttered
#8 good, telephone poles are distracting
#9 background too cluttered and colors don't tie together well enough
#10 doesn't draw you in well enough
#11 doesn't draw you in well enough
#12 pretty good, nothing particularly wrong with it but for some reason isn't expescially appealing.
#13 pretty good, not enough lines toward center
#14 THIS ONE IS KICKASS. nice work.
#15 too many lines upward, can't tell which is primary subject. too many subjects.
#16 pretty good, but too many lines upward
#17 pretty good, leaves the impression of being pretty cluttered though
#18 VERY GOOD. good composition and balancing of light and dark, chair on the left edge of photo is a detractor
#19 very good. good composition. light/shadow balancing could have been slightly better.
#20 too dark
#21 good, but hardly seems original
#22 lines don't draw you in
#23 work on placing of subject, in need of more prominent subject
#24 background too cluttered, colors too distracting.
#25 decent, but lines don't draw you in
#26 better than most. seems cluttered. which is main subject?
#27 very good. foreground is too light, rope on the right is distracting.
#28 too many lines upward
#29 good. composition could be better
#30 strange angle, I don't really like it
#31 very good, sidewalk is too light.
#32 AWESOME! this is the best one. Absolutely nothing wrong with it.
#33 good, shadow on ground beneath bench (of a lightpole?) is distracting. would be better if whole bench was pictured.

Really? It's a good photo, but I disagree with it being the best of the batch. Just nitpicking here (it's still a very good photo!), but it seems to be very bright and almost washed out (maybe just on my monitor?) - perhaps a little less exposure would help?

actually the last 2 of the lighthouse were taken in a mode on my camera called "Vivid", where it brings out the colors and gives that effect. some like it, some don't. i think it makes the pictures look like paintings almost.

and evan, thanks for the criticism but seriously, and don't take this the wrong way but...you are WAY too nitpicky. i mean any criticism is good criticism and i welcome your response...but if you focus on finding faults with a picture instead of enjoying it for what it is and focusing with what's GOOD in it...then what fun is that? for example the one photo of the river, with the boat and fishing rod in the bottom of the pic...you call them clutter, when i put them in the picture on purpose to add a sort of effect to it. a nice lazy river, with a boat and a fishing rod...kinda relaxing looking? makes you think happy thoughts?

just an observation, take it how you will.

I wasn't posting to be negative, I was posting to say what I thought could make each picture more appealing. Nitpicking is what professional photographers do; they take several dozen rolls of very good photos, then they will go through those and pick maybe 4 or 5 of the best, the ones that are most appealing. For every photo you see on display in a gallery, upwards of 100 were probably taken.
