Has any one experienced the inside material at the top does not stick any longer? It just falls and if windows are down just seems that is going all over. Any ideas of how to fix it? I had already sprayed it (removing the 2 handles from both sides, then pushing down a little more to access the spray can) with a "contact" glue (the strongest used fo the crafts) and it did not work.
Any help? Thanx! |

Now contact spray adhesive may work, but i think it would look bad, seeming most spray adhesives are made to use on material that has a batting on it, like the foam you are trying to get the fabric to stick to. the stronger adhesive you use, the harder it will get when dry by rule. I have tryed fixing these before with your problem, with poor results, every upolstery shop ive contacted sayes to replace the headliner, not cheap. so what i do is this........
Go down to your local fabric store and find a material that is close to your factory color (or anything you want, just redo the pillars to match), just make sure it has a foam backing, or a sturdy cloth backing. pull your headliner out, and scrape all headliner material, and foam backing off the headliner board, use 3m general trim adhesive-clear, spray the board down, let sit for 5-8 min, lay new material over it in one piece, make sure to spray down whole board, dont miss anything, no spots without adhesive, as this will be a spot that doesnt stick at all, and will droop (the reason for doing this job to begine with). use a soft paint roller on outside of material to roll new material smooth onto board, work around any edges, or corners by hand, let sit when nice and smooth for a hour or two, then trim outside edges, instal. The best fix I have found, and not as hard as it sounds, my headliner in my e32 750 took me a total of 3 hours work and 2 hours waiting time, I did mine in white leather, same with my pillars, and it looks sweet. now the fabric that is on the inside of the sunroof, now thats another story, hope this helps out some, if you need and more info post questions in here, I'll try to help.......... |

Re: Inside roof material falling on my 91' 735i
Thank you boisebadboy2001.
Did you take the main headliner backing board out of the car or how did you replace the existing fabric? If you got it out of the car, besides the columns, how it is attached to the roof and specially around the sunroof, is it brakeable and easy to get it out in one piece? Thank you again! |

I removed the front and rear pillar covers, unbolted the seatbelt mounts. Then the side column covers, they come out pretty easy, just pull the weatherstriping around doorjam, comes out easily, just carefully pull on them, the inside is a soft fabric material, it is all one piece, pull them all off first, including the one around sun roof. pillar covers are held in by plastic clips, so a tug will pop them loose. once the weatherstriping is pulled loose from headliner, and pillar and column covers, dont forget the cover that has the sunroof switch in it, it pops out easily too. Unplug the switch, dont take the switch out of the pannel, and just let it hang, it will get in the way later. remove the sun visors, dont forget to take the lenses for the mirror lights off, dont remimber if there is anything to undo with the light housings themself, take a close look. once everything is out of the way the headliner comes out prett easy, just clips kinda like in the pillars, take your time with removal, as the backing board is pretty sturdy, it is breakable im sure, dont tug to hard, pull back on a corner just enough to see under the liner, so you can see the mounting, so you may see exactly how yours will come out. It sounds harder then it really is, just a tip, recline your front seats as far as you can, so you will have room once you drop it down, so you can take it out of the car, i had to slightly bend the board and pull it out the drivers rear door to get it out of the car, lay it on a bench, get to work on cleaning the board good, dont leave any adhesive, or any old foam backing on board. get new fabric perfict and dry before reinstal. remimber that material has to be larger then board so material can be wraped around edges and corners, last tips, dont pull material too tight, or it wont lay the way you want, once laying it down on adhesive, work it from the middle out, and dont aply verry much pressure, as adhesive will soak threw material onto outside layer. also, dont be in a hurry to lay new fabric down on board after spraying with adhesive, let it sit for 5 min. so adhesive has time to set up and get sticky. i ruined a nice piece of fabric this way, when adhesive is not set up it flows threw fabric like water, and makes a nasty looking mess. and last of all take extra time to make sure you work fabric around corners, and curves real well, it will be worth the extra effort. Remimber the new fabric needs to have a foam or thick fabris backing on it, if it doesnt, it wont work, and look bad. hope this helps, if you let me know your e-mail address i can send you a few pix of my install, so you might be able to see better before you start on yours....... Ben
