what to do with a distributor core?

hey all,

i replaced my distributor recently. since i bought a new distributor, i still have my old core. i know that there are companies that buy core parts and rebuild them, but usually you give up your core when you go somewhere like autozone or kragens/schucks/checkers and the auto parts store usually take care of it. i don't want to throw the core away; even if i got a few bucks for it, it would be better than nothing.

any thoughts?

--phil.

p.s. the distributor replacement really improved my gas mileage and performance. i kept watching my mileage dip lower and lower and eventually, i started hearing a knocking sound under the hood that turned out to be the distributor. once it was replaced, i was back to the mileages that i would expect from the car. very cool.

Re: what to do with a distributor core?

if the dizzy is still good. keep it. if the housing is bad, keep the ignitor and the coil, then return the core.

re:

i believe that the bushings on the shaft of the distributor are bad, as the distributor was clicking even when idle. i would bet the electrical components aren't bad, so it might be a good idea to keep those.

would it be worth it to sell it on eBay? i mean i have the tdu01, which is quite more expensive to replace than the tdu18, the other distributor that the 1.5L engine used. that being said, i don't know if anyone would want to buy it, or if they could get the replacement parts to fix it.

any thoughts on that?

Re: what to do with a distributor core?

clicking distributors are usually due to a loose rotor or component that just needs to be tightened in a distributor.

i dont know what you mean by bushings, but, if the camshaft to dizzy part of the distributor is worn down really bad, then the dizzy is no good. it is not worth salvaging unless you want to put the money and effort into rebuilding it.

what i mean by the bushings are the bushings that hold the rotor in place and allow it to spin with no fumbling. when i turned the distributor it felt loose and didn't want to spin smoothly; the play was very rough. the rotor itself was fine; i checked and made sure it was tight before i replaced it. i would bet it just needs to be rebuilt mechanically. that being said, i have no idea how much it would cost to do so, or if you can even get a rebuild kit.

Re: what to do with a distributor core?

just keep the coil and ignitor, that itself is worth more than the housing itself.

it makes sense that the coil and igniter are worth more than the housing, but to whom would they be valuble? i suppose i could keep them around for parts, and that would be fine, but if i wanted to sell them, who would want them? eBayers perhaps? someone looking to work on their car either for performance or maintenance?

thanks for all your help, i appreicate the dialogue.

Keep the Ignitor and Coil. Somebody on here may need them and you would be of great help to someone someday.
