Oil Leak and white smoke
Ok I was looking through my old threads and since i saw blue smoke at startup tonight figure i put it in here instead of starting a new one. From searching i think it is oil getting into the combustion chamber.
But for the above on cold days it billows like a chimney and warm days does it right when you start up and it will completely cover the entire vehicle. Now when i start it i found out tonight it is blue. I have been having an oil leak for about a month. Right after the oil cooler hoses were replaced it started. Checked all those nuts and bolts first all tight. Secondly installed Fram Sd-1 and think that could be problem because it does not cover the opening completely. When it is put in and tightened the best i can get itto fit is covering the whole top area of the drain hole and the gasket covering the bottom part. I still have the old drain plug and am going to Autozone tomorrow to get a gasket for it. Could this be leaking because i recently decided to go to 5w-30 instead of 10w-30? I read through some threads that stated that on older rigs the seals just can not handle that type oil in there old age. To replace the white smoke i have decided that when i get the money together to do the valve seals. My mechanic gave me a quote of 140 for parts and labor. Any suggestions or ideas on the leak stop would be cool. I am thinking of picking up a case of Quaker State 10w-30 High Mileage because i have the 5w-30 in there now. I dont know if it matters but i ran a can of Gunk through at the beginning of March. Tried to post in old thread could not. Here is the link to it to refresh our memories http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...ght=blue+smoke

yeh i figured that they were probally gone.
What about the leak do you think the 5 weight oil is causing the problem or no.

Re: Re: Oil Leak and white smoke
Quote:
It is a cold flow factor. It is probably thinner than a 10w30 at room temperature. This is not an oil problem, this is a valve seal problem. Oil will not cure this, you need to fix the cause of the leak, not what leaks through them.

Re: Oil Leak and white smoke
You need a new oil drain plug gasket.

Re: Oil Leak and white smoke
And it is still leaking from it?
You sure the oil is running down from above?

Re: Oil Leak and white smoke
The threads could be stripped out a little. This happened to me, even with a new plug and gasket. I had to tap the old threads (very careful there) and than drained the oil and put in fresh just in case I got any metal debris in the pan. Problem was corrected. My oil plug was 5/8. To find out, try a wrap of teflon tape and check the plug again. This is how I discovered mine.

Re: Oil Leak and white smoke
I'm thinking the the wrong gasket was used or the threads are cross threaded.

Re: Oil Leak and white smoke
ok i found the problem tonight
I took fram out and ran my finger around inside and found about half of my thread was broke off inside. So i got old plug put back in with the gasket from the new plug and finger tightened it since it seemed to be spinning after it got so tight.

Did you get the thread back out of the oil pan?
