94 Wrangler no start but relays click after a minute
This is a no start problem on my brothers 1994 Jeep Wrangler.
It's a six cyl. standard. Turning the key to start and everything appears dead. Then after a short time - a minute or so - the dashboard lights come on and you can here the two relays in the power distrubution box (under the hood) clicking.... but there is still no starting the jeep. He's cleaned all the connections and pulled the P.D. box apart to clean/check it. Checked the grounds and harness. Checked the starter too. He's replaced the igintion switch. Is this a computer problem? Still no go. Any suggestions would be appreciated |

Re: 94 Wrangler no start but relays click after a minute
Sound like maybe the battery is bad, not enough charge to turn the engine over, try jumpstarting. Also make sure the clutch interlock switch is working, with the clutch pedal pressed to the floor it's supposed to complete the circuit to the starter. To test this , take the smaller wire off the starter( lone wire connected to a terminal on the side of the starter seloniod. ) Hook up either a meter or a test light to it, press in the clutch and turn the key, if you get voltage to the meter or test light, then your start circuit is good. If not then look at your clutch switch. Good news is that this is NOT a computer problem.

I don't think the 1994 has a clutch safety switch, so don't waste your time. When you key on, do you get a check engine light? If not, you may have a computer problem. Either way I would say your problem is electrical and I would seek a professional to diagnose the problem so you aren't just trowing parts at it. Good luck, keep us posted

Thanks to all who replied.
Not a battery problem. No "check engine light' comes on initially. All dashbd. lights are off at first attempts to start it. Last week during the heat wave it started up and he was driving it. He's trying to locate a replacement computer. That's tough going. Everyone is out of stock OR they want him to send his computer in for a rebuild These are places like NAPA, Auto Zone, and such). Is it a simple part that gets repaired on these computers or a simple repair? I mean is this a known common problem that some electronics guy is resoldering to the board? I remember a few years back seeing an add for CHEAP rebuilt Ford EEC- IV distributor modules by some electronics hobbist. One traded in his bad one for a new one. That was ancient times when those Ford units went for alot of $$. Anyway what is the proper term in Jeepdom for this computer, an eec??? |

He had it diagnosed at a Jeep dealer and it is the computer.
Now he's off to find one. |
