Your best friend on the highway

Radar and laser detectors. Ohio still allows them, how about your states?

I was wondering what the best out there is, AND, if you could take it apart and hide the components, such as putting the reader or sensor at the edge of your headliner at the top of the winshield, run the wires down the pillar (you would need to splice longer ones, obviously) and to the control unit, maybe up under the dash.

Anyone?

I'll make KITT in real life yet.

Re: Your best friend on the highway

not legal around here, but there are several easy ways to get around it.

My old boss at the dealership had an idea im probly gonna copy. He got a radar detector that required a plug into a cigarette lighter for power. so behind the dash he spliced into the cigarette lighter power and ground and installed a second cigarette lighter port behind the dash out of sight, then plugged in the radar detector and mounted it inside the dash and turned the volume up. This way there is no way to see it or know its there without pulling the dash apart, and he can hear the beep when the radar is detected.

Im gonna have to modify the design a bit because i tend to listen to the radio pretty loud, so im gonna try to wire the radar detector to a light bulb and put it behind a spare guage cluster light in my factory setup. So when that light comes on, i slow down. Something like that anyway. Its not legal, but there isnt any real reason for them to be, so i dont have a problem side stepping this rule. Only reason they are illegal IMO is that the police figure it will cut into their profits.

Re: Your best friend on the highway

That's probably it exactly. Okay, so to mount it hidden you don't have to disassemble it. It's still legal here, like i said, but I want it hidden... just cooler, y'know?

Re: Your best friend on the highway

Wouldn't all that beeping inside the dashboard become a little suspicious to cop at your window who just so happened to leave his radar gun on?

Hence the light. Don't make it red, that'll make it seem like theres a problem, like an idiotlight..... maybe a nice little green LED on your sterio....

could you make it sound a "ticking noise" similar to the sound my speaker makes since it's about to blow out? it should be real loud though, but i think that would be a slick way to get around it, tell the cop your speakers are going.

Re: Your best friend on the highway

not legal in va at all, but here in fl u can have them, n and s carolina, and ga i know u can have them because i drive through there with it all the time. as for the best the passport i think its the 3800 is the one u wanna get. they have a new one that has a blue display i cant remember the number for it. they are sweet, my shop has a contract with the manufacturer to sell them they are 270 for the 3800 (red led) and the newer one has the blue led that going for 285. picks up all band of radar we even caught laser around the bend (think it was bouncing the signal off of on comming cars) because we picked it up around the corner, saved me and the boys from 4 speed traps on the way to the fbody gathering. they also have one thats expensive as hell that is mounted inside the body of the car and u have a display like your radeo and the sensors are in the bumper of your ride. ive heard that they make a benz that has it already installed on the car so u cant take it off, so what can a cop say when he picks up your radar signal if the damn car came with it lol

Re: Your best friend on the highway

In NJ they are both legal but jammers are illegal. I hear good things about the Valentine 1, and a friend with a WRX wired it in hidden

Re: Your best friend on the highway

around here cops use a new kind of radar that cant be picked up by detectors. not all of them have it but alot do especially on the interstate. and i live in ky. id think places like tx and ny would be using them too. plus alot of stores have alarm systems that set off the k or x band on detectors so cops will post there to make u think its a false alarm. but if still using the old scanners any detector w/ x and k, and i think theres a y band should do

Re: Your best friend on the highway

I installed mine in my headliner. I ran the wire along inside the headline down the driver side pillar and then ran it to my center consol to a toggle switch. It works great and you dont see a thing. Its legal here in MI to have both detectors and jammers but it looks a heck of a lot better to have it hidden + u freak people out when the detector goes off and they dont know what the hell it is.

Re: Your best friend on the highway

I forgot to add : I took the radar detector out of its plastic cover all the way down to the main chip and components... then i electric taped it all up... it made it nice and slim so it didnt take up any space at all in the headliner...

Re: Your best friend on the highway

Not sure if they are legal or not here in Colorado.

I won't get one either way. I keep my car within reason on the highway anyways. 85 MPH max.
