do i have to remove the alternator to lift out a 1.6?
refresh my memory,does it have to come off 1st or no?

if you are pulling the motor, no it doesnt have to come off.

Helm's says to remove it... But when I pulled my engine, I just losened both bolts, pulled off the belt, and then pulled the alt all the way towards the block to clear the brake master cylinder... Didnt have too much of a problem getting it in and out with it on... Just have to have someone watch out, make sure u dont smash something, while you jack and manuver the engine...

manuals and mechanics will always reccomend taking alot of that stuff off jsut to make freeing the motor a hell of a lot easier. so i would take it off jsut to save oyur self the trouble.

Leave it on. I have never removed the alternater when pulling a motor. I don't touch the belt either.
