1994 diesel aux tank add on

I have 1994 c1500 with a 6.5 turbo diesel engine. I would like to add an aux tank. Any information on the subject would be appreciated. The tank is not important, what I need to know is if the old gm style switch solenoid from my old1986 or similar would work. I would also like to keep the factory lift pump on the main tank and have another lift pump for the aux tank. The switch for the tanks would have to : actuate the solenoid, change sending units outputs for the fuel gauge, and supply power to the correct lift pump.

I am aware that gm did have a dual tank on some of its later c3500hd, one tons, and that both tanks drain at the same time, however I would prefer to have a switch from one tank to the oher.
