Poor Man's Cool Air Intake?
Okay... again... Newbie Alert, here!
I've already done a search on air intakes, etc., here and couldn't find an answer to the following question: In my stock 2000 GT, just to the left and connected to the air filter housing below the air filter, there is a vertical plastic shaft that extends a good foot to a foot and a-half straight down ending in a plastic cap of some sort. This shaft seems to serve no purpose whatsoever. Additionally, it would appear there are also a couple metal fasteners on either side of the cap holding it on. If I were to snap off the fasteners and disconnect this cap (I'm sure you're all waaaaaay ahead of me by now), might this provide better and cooler airflow and, thus, help boost performance a bit? Thanx, in advance! |

Well... I went ahead and did it... and then some. After removing air-intake "scoop" (what a joke!) that's right up against the underside of the (hot) hood whereon is affixed the aforementioned vertical plastic shaft, it occurred to me that it might just be better to leave the entire thing off! After all, the inlet hole left behind at the bottom of the air-filter housing (and still beneath the air filter) would provide a much larger air inlet, anyway. And yet the air must still flow through the air filter.
In any event, I'll write back re: any effect in performance/gas mileage I find. Thanx again. |

Re: Re: Poor Man's Cool Air Intake?
The "ghetto" remark notwithstanding, after an extensive test drive I am pleased and pleasantly surprised to report that the improvement seems noticeable. I won't know for sure until I see what, if any, improvement might be seen in the gas mileage. But the acceleration seems improved.
No, it's not as pretty as a $250+ CAI. But, it apparently works. |

about the intake....
I just purchased a Cold Air Intake off of Ebay for $18.95, along with Priority Shipping it all came to $50. I took off my stock intake and added this intake I received from this company, and its the same quality intake as you receive from AEM or any name brand part. All your doing is paying for name brand. I dyno'd 12 more HP and 6.5 foot pounds of torque more with this setup when everyone else wasted $200 on a AEM product. Check out Ebay Motors and type in cold Air Intakes, and you will get a list to chose from.
