Couple of questions for the more experianced guys.
Hey guys, I am going to be building a TT motor for a VR4 here in a couple weeks so I figured I would try to find the best possible way to go about doing it, like what to use and the best combination there is. The guy I am doing it for doesnt want anything unheard of, he wants to keep it reasonable but also doesnt want to go cheap. Well I am looking to use a steel crank and plan to go with wiseco pistons, thinking about eagle or crower rods. He just wants the car to run right and not have to worry about blowing the thing up again. Anyways I am thinking about trying to get him to do twin 16g's or something of the sort. Do the obvious fuel upgrades and possibly an AFC with some sort of logger. Just any heads up or things that can be done to make everything easier. I have done quite a bit of searching and have a lot of info already but I figured I'd ask some of you that have been doing this for years and might have a few tricks of your own that you wouldnt mind passing on. I have worked on quite a few VR4's before and I have built a couple dozen DSM's so I understand a lot about them but any extra info is always a plus. No one can ever know too much. I have been on 3si.com and it seems to be a good informational site so I will try to find out everything I can between the sites I have been to.
Anyways, Thanks in advance for any and all tips/tricks/info you guys share. It is greatly appreciated. |

Re: Couple of questions for the more experianced guys.
The stock short block with handle a ton or power, so not a huge need to upgrade any of that, other than going to a 4bolt block so you get the forged steel crank.
For heads I would go with www.dynamicracing.com. I think they also have TD05 turbo kits for sale through them. I think that is PVC you are using for your intake? Melting PVC fumes are toxic and can be deadly. Just an FYI.

I'm with him. If i was to build up an engine, as far as the short block goes, i would just use the stock one (try to ge a 4 bolt) plus upgrade the rod bearings and main bearings (which are not expensive at all) and go with some forged pistons. With heads, you can't go wrong with DR.

Re: Couple of questions for the more experianced guys.
Just the main thing is to break it in right and make sure and get a map-ecu and get it dyno tuned after. the set up sounds right... and like you im more experienced in dsms myself haveing built a few engines in my day. it seams you know what your doing... my first built engine i messed everything up. i had a gst and well lets just say i didnt break it in right and didnd go get it dyno tuned had some blow by and end up haveing take it all apart to replace the rings. take from me it sucks.
make sure you get all your guages and tuneing parts too. AFR, EGT, BOOST, OIL TEMP, OIL PRESSUR, WATER TEMP gauges. Then most important as ive said before a MAP-ECU, dont waste your time on AFC-Controller with a built engine. you will need a good boost contoller and there in many other litle computers you could have... If you have any other question call or email MVPMotorSports the website is www.MVPMotorSports.com |

just to let you know, the MAP-ECU is a piggyback and not an ECU replacement, incase you didnt already know.

i know but thats really all you need...
the owner of MVPMotorSports (Dusty) has a 1100HP Supra and he uses a MAP-ECU. You can find his article in sports compact magazine if youd like... im really good freinds with him and live 30 sec away from his ware house and i personally work for him...

The comment was actually for EclipseRST. I didnt want him to think it was an all out ECU that he would need to program.

Re: Couple of questions for the more experianced guys.
Yes the break in process will be done correctly. I am anal about that and make sure everything is done perfectly if no over done.
But anyways, the guy wants Wiseco pistons and I am glad he does, but should I use the stock rods or upgrade them too. Dont know much on how the stock motor holds together in high HP applicatons but his goals are probably far less than that. For the fuel, an AFC will work just fine, he isnt looking to break any records, just a quick car that will get him from point A to B. A Walbro 255lph pump with some larger injectors will probably be just fine for anything he is looking to achieve. Also for the comment of the PVC intake, it bearly reaches 90-100 degrees in that location. far less then what it takes to melt PVC. I've already been over this with many people. Plus its not the easiest to find 4" mandrel bent piping in my area and if I am lucky enough to find some anywhere within 100 miles its over $100. Thanks for the replys. Jake |
