Have a 2001 beetle 1.8l turbo. When the engine is cold the blue temp light comes on then will go out. After about 2 mins of the engine idling the light will start to flash red. Then will go off and come back on. The cooling fans are coming on at 208'f, I have changed the black ect to the green one. I have changed the thermostat and gakets. I have no DTC's Can somebody help??

sounds like the water pump is faulty.
Are you sure you changed the ECT and not the coolant level sensor? THe ect is under the engine covers and the level sensor is right next to the battery.

Thanks for the response. I for changed the Ect under the engine cover.
I have read about the water impellor breaking on the water pump. But if that was to happen wouldn't the car overheat all the time at idle?? I can let the car idle for a long time and the temp never goes over 208'. The fan cycle on and off. I can fell all the hoses and seem to have good cercutlation. Or is that from the pump that sits on the the fan bracket.(What is that pump really desinged for?) Is 208' too hot? |

If you have changed the thermostat and the fans are operating normally, there is not much left but the water pump. The water pump impeller is plastic while the water pump is aluminum and is very common to break off. When you drive the car do you loose heat from the dash? That is a good sign that there is no circulation, another is to remove the coolant fill cap and rev the engine, the level should drop slightly.
Also, the electric pump by the fan is an after run pump designed to cool the turbo after engine shut down. If you change the water pump your self, buy a good quailty timing belt with it. Youll need it. |
