WIP: Buddy's 2003 Ford Lightning drag truck

Another contracted job from a friend of mine. The kit is the Revell '99 Lightning. His truck is an '03 Lightning with internal engine mods that he drag races. It looks stock appearing except for bigs n littles with drag slicks, monochromatic paint scheme, and a tonneau cover.

Sorry, I don't have first step kinda pics, but here you can see what I had to do to fix the grille. The '99 is an eggcrate grille, whereas the '03 has 5 horizontal slats.

I cut out the eggcrate, and also cut the small Ford symbol out of the middle for later use.

Came together pretty good I think. Had to use BMF behind the headlights. Odd that a kit with this much detail and quality wouldn't have stuff for behind the headlights. Was a BITCH getting those slats aligned though.

And then there was the rear bumper fit that others warned about on the forum. I finally managed to cram it together.

Chassis almost together...

Came out perfect! Did you have to use putty/shape to make the edges of the slats look smooth?

I considered it but the size makes it way too hard to work the putty properly. Basically I just sliced tiny grooves in the side of the fascia and then filled each one with a generous drop of glue. Then I fit the slats in, made them as even as possible, and let it dry, despite how crappy it looked. THEN I worked the dried clue with small files to get the shape right.

That wouldn't even work, though, as the Excursion is diesel.
