Question Front Strut Replacement

I am getting a 1995 honda Accord EX for my daughter. The previous owner claims it needs front struts. I have always worked on Jeeps and old Pontiacs, but never anything with struts. Does this require a special spring compressor or other "special" tools? I have ALWAYS done all my own work and hate letting a shop work on anything. But I am thinking it may be better to just let a shop do it if I will have to buy a bunch of special tools or if it is overly time consuming.

Opinions?

Re: Front Strut Replacement

If he has worked on cars a lot before I say it is something he could do. Struts can be done even if you dont work on cars a lot. Somone else told me that a spring compressor is not needed as well. Try and search this forum for some how to's. I am searching as well cause I am purchasing some more expensive shocks and would like to save some money on install....good luck.

Re: Front Strut Replacement

Is her car lowered?, cause if it is at all you don't want to go with stock shock...you will want aftermarket.

Re: Re: Re: Front Strut Replacement

You dont need a spring compressor, if you want to do it the wrong way. Basically you use the cars weight to compress springs, take off top nut and lift that corner slowly or have the car on jackstands - use a floor jack under the LCA to compress and releive spring.. I'd much rather do it that way than using a cheap ass parts store rental, but we have a beautiful spring compressor at the shop.

My suggestion, remove the strut assy. bring them and new struts to a shop, let them change the springs over.

Remove 3 upper strut mount bolts - leave center one alone. Remove bolt to LCA - disconnect ABS wires and brake hoses. It will come right with a little wiggling.

If want OEM parts - http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/

Soak all the bolts with penatrating a day or two before you do the job.

Id have to agree jackassi. Those stock springs have a ton of torque on them if you unscrew that holding nut someone is bound to get hurt. Theres no way of getting the stock spring back on without a compressor.
