My 97 Tahoe is missing

I have a 1997 Chevy Tahoe. A couple of weeks ago I was driving down the interstate, when I let off the gas to take an exit, it started missing. I have had the spark plugs replaced, the spark plug wires, the rotor cap, the distributor sensor replaced and the fuel filter. Now when I stop at a red light it lunges like it wants to go and it sounds like it is backfiring sometimes. I just need some suggestions on what could be wrong with it. I can't afford a new car. I would appreciate any help.

The motor size is 350 and the service engine soon light has been on for two years or more. and i'm not stupid i'm just a woman that knows just enough about cars to be dangerous

Re: My 97 Tahoe is missing

I don't think your stupid.

When the computer sees that something is wrong, it turns on the SES (Service Engine Soon) light and stores a trouble code. If you go to AutoZone (or most Advance Autos) they will hook up a scanner and tell you the codes for free. Those guys usually don't know what they are talking about so, just write down the codes, then come back and tell us what they are. When we have the codes we will be able to help you a lot better. Anything help that we can give now would just be a guess. And guessing isn't a good way to fix a problem effeciently.

Re: My 97 Tahoe is missing

you shouldnt be driving with the check engine light on... but anyways, is it backfiring out of the tail pipe?

I assume it is fuel injected??

since it has a distributer, it sounds like your timing is messed up.
