Spark plug wire removal?

I'm about to change the plugs on my '01 ML320 and it appears there are small heatshields on the plug boots (plug end) that are preventing me from removing the wires. How do I remove the wires? I just didn't want to go yanking on them and break one when I don't have replacements yet...
