fx16 gts problem...
On my dads fx16 he has started and I have started to notice at about 4000-5000rpm the engine makes a weird noise, Sorta sounds like something opening, or rubbing, or something. My dad sold toyotas in 1987, he was trying to tell me it was just the engine changing over to its high rpm ''cam'' thats what he said. I might be buying the car from him. I was wondering if this is a problem. The car deff has more power once the nose is done...It almost feels like vtecish. higher rpms=more power...I also noticed it comes earlyer when not WOT. Like when on the gas half or 3 quaters , it happens around 4,000rpm. If at WOT, it does it at about 4500-5000rpm. It actuly feels pretty cool how it kicks in. Is it a problem or not? The car is a stick and has 180,000 miles.

look at the intake manifold you will notice the badge TVIS = Toyota varible intake system. now look below the plenium (top of intake manifold that throttle body is one) and try and look realy good at the intake runners you will notice there are 8 even though it is a 4 cyl, here is TVIS at the end of there runners between the intake and the block is a plate and eery other runner have somthing similar to a throttle butterfly valve in front of it, these 4 runners are shut off during low rpms for more torque, (less are needs smaller area to travel with more velocity) at 4k - 4.5k a small selonoid lets vacume open a small actuator on the TVIS shaft and more air for higher RPM's thats what you are hearing. now take your air box off of your vien air meter and put a cone filter on it, then you will realy like the way it sounds
