Synthetic vs regular oil?
Ok, I am the original owner of this car (2004 Impala LS). The car has barely 2000 miles on it. I want to do everything right straight from the get go so it lasts as long as possible. Should I use synthetic or regular oil? I've read that I shouldn't switch over to to synthetic until 2 or 3k miles and some people say not to switch until 20-30k miles because synthetic is too slick for new engines. So what's everybody's take on that? But is the added expense worth it? Will it really make my car last longer?
Plus I have a question about the oil change feature of the car. How many miles does it go before it tells you that you need to change the oil? My last car (95 Aurora) went about 5-6k miles before it told you to change it. I changed it every 3,000 miles anyway. |

Re: Synthetic vs regular oil?
I use Mobil1 synthetic in all my cars. There is no required break in period, before you switch to synthetic. Mobil1 is factory fill for lots of cars already and the number increases every year. Just don't use the new Extended life Mobil1 and never use FRAM oil filters.

Re: Synthetic vs regular oil?
What's wrong with fram oil filters? I love the grip they have so you can turn them off with bare hands.

Re: Synthetic vs regular oil?
They are cheaply made. The internal parts of most filters are metal, fram makes them out of cardboard.
The anti-drainback valves inside the fram filters don't work, so when you shut the engine off all the oil drains out of the top of the motor, which means everytime you start your engine, it dry starts causing excessive wear and noisy starts. Use an AC Delco or WIX filter. I use NAPA GOLD, they are made by WIX and are excellent filters. I have no problem removing any brand of filter with my bare hands, perhaps you are over tightening them. |

Re: Synthetic vs regular oil?
Im thinking of that new Mobil 1 15000 mile synthetic 15000 miles before a oil change sounds crazy but Eh just wonder what GMPP would say wouls my power train warrenty stand up to it ??
ExxonMobil announces that it is the first major oil company to introduce a line of high-endurance motor oils designed for longer oil change intervals, as recommended by many of today’s automobile manufacturers. These new motor oils deliver proven performance and guaranteed, long-lasting protection of critical engine parts for 5,000, 7,500, or 15,000 miles. The formulations for: * Mobil 1 Extended Performance * Mobil Clean 5000 * Mobil Clean High Mileage * Mobil Clean 7500 provide protection against harmful sludge and deposits. You don't want to use it. Read the link I put in my first post.

Re: Synthetic vs regular oil?
I am a dealer of Amsoil Synthetic lubricants, have been for nearly 20 years and there is no required break in necessary on the engine. Amsoil is the only oil out on the market that boasts an extended drain interval and backs it up. Naturally, I agree with the other responses that the suggestion is to use synthetic because of the chemical properties inherent with them vs petroleum. In the case of Amsoil and extended drains, the question concerning warranties usually comes up and Amsoil has you covered. I've done the research on the other oils out there but I've personally never found anything that comes close to the synthetics, especially when you take look at Amsoil and the filters they make.

Always dragging in professionals out of the woodwork, heh... I'd use synth if my car hadn't already chugged 160,000 miles worth of 10W-30 and 5W-30 |

Re: Synthetic vs regular oil?
Only thing about my dealership is that mine was purchased back when they offered a lifetime one time fee. Its been one of the best things I've invested in.

Re: Synthetic vs regular oil?
the oil still gets dirty.
trhat is why we change because it gets dirty.. synthetic or regular, you should still change it after 3,000 miles, so you are wasteing money with synthetic. alot of old cars have 300,000 some miles on them, and they didnt have synthetic oil back then. |
