85 nissan-datsun 720 4X4

I ahve a 85 nissan that had a blown head gasket. i took everything off to get to the head, and when i did the head gasket just slid off. Is it nessesarily so that the gasket it self would be ripped? or could it just be compressed? Please let me know if you have any information.
