The manual says that my Ext. Cab Z71's oil capacity is 6 quarts, my old 96 2dr Tahoe 4X4 had a 5.7L, and only took 5 quarts? Seems like alot of oil?
How much do you guys put in your 5.3 Vortecs? Thanks in advance. |

Re: 2002 5.3l Z71 Oil Capacity
If the manual says 6 quarts, 6 quarts is probably right. Even if it's a little over it wouldn't hurt anything.

Re: 2002 5.3l Z71 Oil Capacity
some manuals say 5 quarts but they have the little "*" and somewhere else it says to add 1 quart if you change the oil filter. my ex missed that in her manual and almost fried her engine cuz of it.

I also have a 2002 Z71 ext. 5.3L. It indeed takes six full quarts according to both the dipstick (after pouring the first 5 qts) and the Haynes manual specs. Obviously, you're changing the filter, right? If you want to be sure, fill it with five quarts, run the engine, then check it again (also a good time to check for leaks). You should see that you need to add another quart.
BTW: My dad drives a Volvo S70 5-cyl. which also takes a full six quarts despite the smaller engine. |
