Question ABS Power Relay

I am so glad that I found this forum! I have been a Windstar owner since my first one in 1995, and been happy so far. I lost my 95 due to a gravel truck deciding that he wanted my lane, so I ended up in the ditch, and it was a total write off from the ins. company. SO now I own a 2000 model, and I am happy as a clam.

My question is this, I have an ABS light iluminated, and the box tells me the main ABS "power relay" failure, then it goes on to list all the other sensors in the system, two per wheel. I am guessing that the reason is that since the main relay has failed, it is causing all the other ones to show as fail since they have no power going to them.

I have looked at the owners manual under the roadside emergency information, and I have located the relay/fuse box that sits outboard of the battery. What I cannot figure out, is which relay is the one for the ABS? The mechanic here wants to play swap the relay in order to find out which is which. Can someone out there point me in the right direction as to which relay is the one that manages the power for the ABS system?

Thanks in advance

Marvin

Re: ABS Power Relay

My diagram shows no relay. There are two 40 amp fuses under the hood(101 and 102) that power the ABS Control Module. There is another fuse under the dash( fuse 7) a 10 amp fuse that also goes to the module. What is the specific code you have and I can look through Ford's manuals and help you more.

ABS Lights up

I have a 2000 Windstar also. The ABS light goes on, sometimes at slow speed and other times it remains off for a while and then comes on. A mechanic at work said it could be one of the wheel sensors, possibly dirty and needs cleaning, or a bad relay in the main ABS control assembly. I went to the local Ford dealer and he said I needed a new relay, about $5. However a service tech at the same dealer said the relay is build into the ABS control assembly and the whole thing would need to be replaced. About $700. I am hoping that it is just a dirty sensor and a good cleaning will cure the problem.
But I will check to see what your solution is.
Thanks in advance.

Re: ABS Lights up

That is exactly what is happening with my ABS light. Now the problem that I have is the mechanic that had been working on the van got upset with me that I came looking for some asistance on a forum. Basicly told me that I could park my van somewhere in the neighborhood of....... well you all get the idea.

So now I start over again but what you have discribed is exactly what this one is doing. Sometimes its on, sometimes its off, sometimes it comes on when I am just driving, and sometimes comes on when I just am idling like at a stop light or sign. More to come when I can get someone to talk to me here locally. Seems that I insulted him with my poking around a forum.
