make the mr2 a rwd front engine car???

so basically the lay out for a mr2 is a front wheel car with a 180 degree turn. well what if i took a v6 engine and put it in the front of the car after completely taking and sawing everythign out thats in there and all new axles and suspension would that work or have i given it too much though and that sounds stupid? cause ive heard of mr2s (pobaly only about 4 who have this done) were the owner switched out the 4cylinder for a v6. just food for thought.

Re: make the mr2 a rwd front engine car???

The engine is not FWD switched around 180°, it is merely moved to the back of the car. On both the FWD and MR2 versions of the 4AGE, 5SFE and 3SGTE have the tranny on the driver side (US) and the engine on the passenge side.

The people who have done V6 swaps (and there are many more than 4) have put the V6 in the middle of the car where the stock motor sits.

You would never get an engine into the front of an MR2.

Re: make the mr2 a rwd front engine car???

the mr2 isn't designed to have an engine in the front. putting a larger engine in the stock orientation is not a new concept, but changing the drive layout is usually more work than it is worth, especially in the case of changing an already optimal layout.

Re: make the mr2 a rwd front engine car???

why do you say i would never? its just an idea that no one has done that i think might be possible. its just like taking the concept of ppl with front wheel drive and making them rwd. except this would be for a better balance of the car. and just for fun to see if it would work. i think you can make it work i just think no one want to try it cause its sucha good car already

Re: make the mr2 a rwd front engine car???

how do you think it would better balance the car?

i have a similar experiment if you don't believe the physics and mechanics behind frame construction.

build a popsicle stick carrier designed to hold a 10lb brick near one end , then swap the position of the brick to the front.

converting FWD to RWD is different, that usually only involves fabrication of a driveline after you situate the engine in the origonal position.

Because an engine/transmision would not fit in the front of an MR2.

Re: make the mr2 a rwd front engine car???

1) engine won't fit in the front.
2) NO way transmission would fit behind engine.
3) drivetrain would need to go through fuel tank.
4) Mid engined IS optimal balance for performance FR is a compromise for practicality

what's the point again?

why not see if you can stuff a v12 in the back of a metro and convert it to rwd? probly because it's a waste of money even in the rare event that you made it work...

the mr layout in the mr2 may not be a perfect 50/50 weight distribution, but the rear bias allows for better traction and more stability when power is distributed...

along with better traction the mr layout provides a lower polar mass than even a ff, rr, fr or front-midship design (fr layout with engine center-line behind the front axles slightly...cars like the rx7 and 350z utilize this design). lower polar mass makes the car easier to toss around corners, but it also makes the car less stable since the cars naturally tendency would be to spin or face ass-end in the event that you lose control...still it's better than a rr design since their tendency is to always face ass-end in a skid...hence why 99% of cars on the road have more weight in the front and usually drive with the front wheels...it's cheaper and more stable to build an ff than any other drivetrain design.
