why does my 1996 chevy blazer use fuel pumps? We have owned it since 2001 and it has went through 6 fuel pumps since. We are getting frustrated because no one seems to know the answer.

That said, do you continuously let the fuel go real low on the gauge? This can cause problems because the gasoline actually cools the pump... Also you may want to look into walbros... Have you also considered an electrical problem causing too much power to the pump and melting the bushings?

Re: Fuel Pumps
I guess I worded that wrong. I posted at 5 something AM. Too early and not enough coffee in me. I meant that the darn thing kills a fuel pump in 6 months or less. But thanks for the reply we'll check on that.

Re: Fuel Pumps
What does it usually do when the pump goes? Does it completely quit, or does the fuel pressure drop?
What brand of replacement pump are you using?

Re: Fuel Pumps
When the blazer is on the road for awhile it looses pressure. Also the fuel pump starts to make a loud humming noise right before it goes.

Re: Fuel Pumps
always replace the filter when you change the pump. it's not normal for pumps to die that fast even if they are jobber pumps. make sure the electrical connectors& ground are clean& tight. also make sure none of the baffles inside the tank are broken and the tank isn't full of rust& dirt. i would empty the tank and pressure wash it then flush it out with lots of water to get all the crap out just make sure it's completely dry before putting it back in.

Re: Re: Fuel Pumps
I agree - clean that tank when replacing the pump. My dad and I replaced the pump on my 98 Blazer when it got so loud (whining all the time) that I was afraid it would die on me on the road. The replacement pump starting whining almost immediately, and still does (and this is over two years later). I think they just get noisy for some reason.

Re: Fuel Pumps
our fuel pumps are NEVER silent.
They always whine as do many vehicles by many makers. Fuel pumps are not always supposed to be silent, especially on a high pressure fuel system.

Re: Fuel Pumps
they do whine....but before mine started giving me problems...."intermittant power after warm up"
it was really loud...louder than iv ever heard.... i think it was the bearings in teh pump..... i also notice when im lower than 1/2 a tank i hear the whine more....than when its full..... makes sence....to me... also after i changed my pump...and pump screen<"A MUST DO!!" i noticed a good difference in power........ i got the truck with 136k on it......and never felt as responcive as it does now....... pump/screen/filter....man what a difference. |
