Marvel Mystrey Oil

Hi guys. Just wondering what you all think of MMO? What do you think of additives in general? What do you use/recommend?

Re: Marvel Mystrey Oil

Don't bother with them.

Sometimes if you have a specific problem, such as sticky lifters, oil burning or leaking seals you can get temporary relief from a a specific additive intended to fix that problem.

However, additives cannot always compensate for many kinds of problems and cannot substitute for proper repairs.

If your car is in good shape and has no problems, just use good quality oils and filters and perform regular maitenance.

Virtually all oils already have a complex package of additives already in them which have been engineered for that oil. Why screw that up with something else?

I have to agree with MagicRat as for additives in general. I have heard that MMO is a good penetrating lube for freeing up frozen motors and other stuff. Oh yeah, welcome aboard!

Well as you can see most people have lots to say on this subject so heres my take!

my neighbor has a gremlin ( yes it still runs) he has been using MMo ever since he bought it new he would replace 1 quart of oil for the MMO when he changed his oil,, it put over 380.000 on it before they had to do some major repairs on it When they took the heads off the mechanic could not believe how clean the motor was with as many miles as it had on it, the garage even took pics to show people what an engine can look like if you take care of it.. my neighbor swears by the stuff (MMO) and buy looking at the pics of his engine i would tend to beleve him, had his thermo kept on working properly he would still be running with the factory motor, of all thats out on the market i would use MMO before any other

I use MMO in both my 88 Laredo and my 86 Nissan P/U (owned since new). Both run great.

As far as additives in general, I do add an injector cleaner periodically.

My parents bought new a 1970 Buick Electra 225 back when I was still a little-leaguer. My Dad began adding a pint of Marvel Mystery oil each oil change (3,000 mile intervals). He was sure not to overfill the crankcase so that meant using 4.5 quarts of Castrol 20W/50W motor oil and finishing off the refill with the pint of Marvel Mystery oil. He performed this ritual faithfully. After 105,000 miles and ten years he had to have the valve cover gaskets replaced and when they pulled the valve covers the Buick mechanic could not beleive it was not a new engine. I saw it myself. The rocker arms and springs were gleaming. By contrast, my 1963 Ford galaxie 500XL which I had bought from a wrecking yard as a first car had the same work done and mine were a black gooey mess. I can assure you whoever owned my Ford before me did not use Marvel Mystery oil like my Dad did. It can also be used in the gasoline as a top cylinder lubricant. It can also be used for a temporary fix on your front stabilizer bar bushings when they begin to squeak on your XJ. Use it as a key hole lubricant, ect. I'm not big on additives, but correctly using ones like this product can only help.

Of hundred of test done by labs over the years. Of the labs that I trust or at least have heard of. Not one of them is willing to say that any additive or SYN oil will make a common engine in good shape used under normal condition last any longer.
They say this is slipper or that will hold up better under condition out side the norm. But for most people good old Dino oil is hard to bet. That's what 98% of the engines use (<-- A WAG) and are doing just fine on.

Thanks for your two cents everyone. A friend has a late 90's GMC Z71 with 100,000+ miles. He was having trouble about a year ago with some knocking and, I believe, very rough idling. He took it to one shop and was given an estimate for a complete rebuild. He took it for a second opinion and the mechanic put in a bottle of MMO with an oil change and the problem disappeared. After witnessing that first hand, I was interested in other's results.

My XJ only has about 47K on it, so I don't know if I'd really be gaining anything with comparatively few miles.
