No drive forward or reverse

My auto transmission had a total failure in the sense that when I shift into drive or reverse I get nothing. But even a hint that its trying to engage.

The tranny fluid looks fine, no hint of a total meltdown.

I was driving fine down the freeway when it happened. Then the engine just started to rev freely.

Any ideas. Is the shifting electronic on this model. 2001 Galant V6 GTZ.

Thanks for your help

Rob

Re: No drive forward or reverse

Sorry to not provide you with information on the porblem, but I have encountered the same exact problem. I believe shifting is electronic in this model, but from what I am told it i supposed to go to a default gear and at least allow the tranny to move the car. As i find out info i will keep this board informed, please do the same. I hope it is a $45 fix.

Thanks,
Rory

Not good news,

I brought it to a Mitsu dealer hoping they had incite over a regular tranny man. They took out the tranny and tore it apart. they found that the main gear cracked. Metal from the cracked gear made way into the forward pump and the torque conversion unit and damaged them both.

That is what I was told at least, I never saw and metal shaving at any time on my stick and never heard any noise previous to one click that pre-empt the end of the tranny.

Dealer said "$3900", I said "I would get a tranny from the junk yard"
