hesitation on acceleration

Hello,
I have a 1994 roadmaster wagon. What would cause a hesitation on acceleration. It seems I need to really push on my accelerator pedal and wait a second or two for my car to accelerate. This is kind of dangerous since I don't exactly know just how fast it will move when it does.
thanks
