Broken Amp?

Um, ya, i started listening to my music on thurday afternoon, and then im headed over my buddys house friday night, and my amp dont turn on. Its a JBL p180.2. The red light comes one, then the green comes on, and then fades off and the red light comes back on. Checked fuses and connections, all fine, the amp was pritty hot, could it be over hearting?

anyone with a system probelm should get a multimeter and check for battery voltage going to the amp, most problems with amps are because of wiring,
even if you checked both ends (connections) of the cables, in a truck I fixed recently with a similar problem. there was a crimp type butt connector for the remote wire that deteriorated under the carpet, and caused the system to periodically turn on/off
Do you have a power (red) light without the remote wire connected? (green = on) (red = power)
Do you have another working amp you can jumper the remote wire from? (this is how I found the problem on the Truck)

Re: Broken Amp?

if it was pretty hot the amp was overheating and could have caused damage

"pretty hot" is a relative term, amps get real warm, but shouldn't get hot enough to burn you or anything... Yes, overheating can cause permenant damage, but you should at least test it before buying a new one!

Re: Broken Amp?

you can find them at hardware stores

you can use them check to make sure the sub isn't blown, the amp is getting power, the amp is getting a signal, the amp is putting out a signal, etc.

Re: Broken Amp?

It sound like your amp. The reason is b/c your subs are prob 2ohm and when you have them bridged together they create 1ohm. 95% of amps aren't 1ohm stable and you can be just damaging your amp, if its not already.
