91 Jeep Cherokee keeps stalling. Help me!!

I just bought a 91 Jeep Cherokee laredo. I just had my ABS breaks fixed. It was about $1,200.00 to fix. The day I got it back I was driving home from work, and it just stalled out on me. My steering wheel locked up, and I had to pull the wheel as hard as I could to steer it to the side of the road. It was scary! Thank god I wasnt on the highway. I put it back in park, turned it off all the way, and started it up again. It did it to me 2 more times. Anyone have a problem like this? I need some feedback ASAP.

Thanks,
Alyssa

If it was OK before you had the brakes fixed, I'd take it back to the shop.

The wheel didn't "lock up" but you did lose your power steering. Did it stall after restart right away or were you able to drive fotr a while before stalling? Did it take about the same amount of time to stall again?

Could be lot's of things, CPS, fuel, vacuum.

When your engine shuts off the power steering pump does not work so thats why your wheel locked up, but the stalling could be anything, if you just bought it you might need a tune up or if you know someone who can do it you save alot of money.

I brought it back to the mechanic. He replaced the crank sensor. But it still does it..Maybe it does just need a tune up.

I agree with Suadade, if it ran good, BEFORE you took it to the "Mechanic", than he had to of done something to it during his "repair" to cause the problem you have. I would NOT pay for anything that this individual says is the problem, because I believe they are trying to get more moneyt out of you. In short, they screwed up something, they need to find it and fix it. When you said it stalled, when did it stall(what were you doing?) Look at the vacuum line going from the intake manifold to the brake booster, makesure its connected and that there are NO breaks, or cracks in the tube. This WIll cause you to stall.

Sensor

Yeah thats odd that it would even shut off while on the move, if it runs ruff at idle or doesent pass emissions it might need a tune up if its never had one, it seems like these jeeps timing sets off after about 50000. but like the mechanic probably thought, that sounds like a sensor because it shut off while driving. If it happens again you can put the transmission in neutral and try to start while moving. Basically it could be anything and hooking it up to a computer would be nice if it were a sensor, so you might want to try either the dealer or an auto parts store to maybe hook it up and it might tell you whats up.

Does it have a remote starter? This happened to me before and it was from the remote starter not being connected properly! Call around to see how much a scan is and have it scanned. Talk to other people you know about their mechanics and take it to someone who has a good reputation!

also, I believe chrylser has a life time free fix on the abs pump and a few other abs components. What did they do to run up a $1200 bill for brakes?

HI, THERE IS A FUEL PUMP BALLAST RESISTER ON THE DRIVERS SIDE INNER FENDER. CHECK AND SEE THEY MAY HAVE BROKEN THE BALLAST RESISTER IT'S A WHITE CERAMIC BLOCK. WITH 2WIRES ON IT. THEY MAY HAVE HIT IT WHEN WORKING ON THE BRAKES CONTROLER MOTOR IT'S RIGHT BY IT. COULD BE BROKEN WIRE COMING LOOSE WITH VIBERATIONS OF DRIVING IF YOU NEED PICT. HOLLER.

that sounds like a speed distance sensor, or long distance sensor. when they go bad they will cause the car to stall at stop signs or when you slow down.

I would agree with the balast resistor. Replaced mine once left me stranded on the freeway the second time I bypassed it. Its on Cherokee only to keep the noise level down on the Fuel Pump. Wont hurt to By pass it. Might be worth a try!

Re: 91 Jeep Cherokee keeps stalling. Help me!!

It did have a keyless entry system. But whoever owned the jeep last, lost it. Maybe it was a keyless starter. Who knows. But just to let you guys know, the jeep doesnt stall on me when i first start it up for aboput 5 mins. Then it stalls, and about two mins later it will stall again. it seems to do it when i take my foot of the gas and coast for a little bit. But it also does it when my foot IS on the gas. it just randomly does it. And it gets worse and worse. The timing in between the stalling gets shorter and shorter. Like im stalling 5 times in 20 mins. It's being worked on now. The guy is taking forever. I'm so tired of this. For he time being, i'm driving aound in an 87 toyota 4runner thats about to shit the bed. The thing has 176,000 miles on it. I hope my jeep is ready before it dies.

Sounds more like a fuel problem (or lack of). Check the fuel pressure at the rail. You could try changing the fuel filter. There have been a number of posts reporting that the fuel pump connections came loose and caused similar symptoms.

if you have checked the fuel pump ballast resistor and it didnt help your stalling, check the fuel pressure and it if stalls mostly when you take your foot off the gas could be the IAC Motor located on the back of the throttle body. A good cleaning of the throttle body and the Iac wouldnt hurt. THe Iac is a know problem on Jeeps when it comes to low rpm stalling.
