Question Wet Floorboards

I was searching through here and think i found out what i need to know but i have a couple of questions.

First the floor boards are soaked on both sides and i am wondering if this is because when you open the hood there is nothing over where the ECM is? Is this supposed to be all open. It goes engine, firewall, open space with ECM/92 cavalier 2.2

Second is the car rattles when at 10 or below. Is this the shitty early GM abs or the bearing in the accessory drive belt tensioner.

don't know about the rattling, but i had a simular problem on my 99 cavalier about wet interior floor boards and it turned out that my windshield had to be re-sealed.....
a far as i know I.M.H.O. there's nothing that's suppose to be over the ECM. IT'S ENGINE, FIREWALL, AND SPACE...........

Re: Wet Floorboards

There is a little rubber flap just under the fan motor, on the left side, on the firewall. This is where water in the "space" drains. The common problem is "stuff" builds up under the cowl and gets washed to this location so eventually it clogs up. Take off the cowl cover, airbox cover and the airbox itself. Removing the airbox will give you access to the drain area, start shoveling the crap. The airbox has a rubbery type gasket, it should come off easy if you pull it up easy, then re-tightening will seal it, no need to use glue.

Oh, and don't forget to hook your washer hose back to the cowl sprayer, you can connect it with the cowl bolted on too.

Re: Wet Floorboards

I just got a 1992 Cavalier at the auction this week and it had the same problem. I was able to clean out the crap without removing the airbox. I partially removed the weatherstripping on the cowl. Then I popped up the black plastic cover that covers the fresh air intake to gain easy access to the backside of the drain hole. I used a shop vac with the narrow crevice tool to suck out all the debris that I could, then took the garden hose and blasted out the rest. There was a lot of stuff in there. BTW there is another drain on the other side so make sure you unplug this one too. The one on the drivers side is easier to do as there is nothing in your way.

Re: Wet Floorboards

Yeh with this rig its been one problem after the other. When my mom first got it sucked antifreeze till the head gasket blew 3 weeks ago got it fixed under warranty and now this morning going to school i bumped my knee off of the dash by the radio and the whole car died. i dont know if thats a wire or what but after i restarted it the check oil level light or check engine light blinked when i got on the accellerator then when i was off no blinkage.

Re: Wet Floorboards

Ok guys my dad and i cleaned it out nothing was in there under the wiper cowl. We were looking inside on the floorboards and it seems to be coming through the firewall right around where the gas pedal brake pedal would be on drivers side passenger side not found yet .

Sometimes the seam sealer can start lifting, esp. around the corners of the cowl. Get auto body seam sealer from NAPA or an auto body supply store. Make sure you have cleaned all debris out of the cowl area and you can see water actually coming out of BOTH drain holes when you spray with the garden hose. The passenger side hole I bet is still plugged or partially plugged up. You'll see the rubber flap that covers the hole under the fan housing. If everything checks out there, you may have a hole rusted through somewhere in the cowl. Check also around the windshield for any condensation on the inside at the seal.
