'93' 320i starting problem

I have 1993 320i saloon (E36/M50) with 80475 miles on it. The 'Inspection light' just came on but I don't think it has a direct connection to my problem. It won't start! It cranks just fine but there is no spark at the spark plug (pulled the spark plug wire/coil off and put a know good plug on grounded it and cranked the engine....no spark). Any AND ALL ideas are welcome. The car is not at my home so I'll entertain as many ideas as can be thrown at me.

It could possibly be an e30 that managed to be sold and titled as a 1993. That did happen to a few of them, although it was mostly only convertibles that had this happen.

Have you gotten yours fixed? Was it the ECU? How did you isolate it down to that problem?
