figured I'd get an outside opinion before looking into a mechanic. You guys have a lot of jeep knowledge so I thought you might have a suggestion. Here is whats going on. For a while now my 2000 jeep cherokee 4wd automatic would rev while in park or while I was at a stoplight in gear. Not much, just enough so I could feel it want to move forward a bit. Never really anthing major so I never checked it out. But now every once in a while while in gear at a stoplight, the jeep will stall. Starts right back up, and usually only does it a couple times a week. Heres the thing, I may have messed something up last month while switching into part time 4x4. I threw it into 4x4 but it must have not engaged properly, and it slipped out while driving in probably 1st or 2nd gear. SO.... thats when the stalling started. Seems related, but what could it be. Did I warp the chain on my transfer case? I'm not a mechanic by any means but I like to go as far as I can before seeking professional help. So basically any help you can give me regarding the irratic idling or the infrequent stalling issue would be a big help. thanks, aaron

What you are describing has been described before with either the TPS on the throttle body or the crank sensor going bad.
A very big guess but what others have complained about and their presenting symptoms when it was either of those is very similiar to what you are describing. Could you have done that much damage that the engine is still engaged and it stalls when stopped? Like if you forgot to take a manual out of gear or have the clutch pedal in? Is that what it feels like, lugging so low it stalls due to being engaged with the transmission? Jim |

There really is no lugging, sometimes i feel a slight jump and it quits and sometimes it just stalls with no warning. Almost like it catches on something. I think I will try the sensors first, I guess it could be stalling due to the irratic idling at stops. If that doesn't fix it, next is what kind of damage I could have done to the transmission. Thanks for the help, any other info you have is much appreciated. -aaron

Re: idle, stalling problems 2000 cherokee
Quote:
GET A CAN OF SPRAY THROTTLEBODY CLEANER . REMOVE THE AIR HOSE. INSIDE THE THROTTLEBODY BORE OR OPENING YOU WILL SEE A SLOT. THIS IS THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE. START JEEP HOLD ON HIGH IDLE, USING THE SMALL STRAW THAT ON CAN, USING SHORT BURST'S SPRAY INTO SLOT. CLEAN IT GOOD, ALSO CLEAN AROUND THE THROTTLE BORE YOU CAN'T OVER CLEAN IT. DO NOT SPRAY ANY OF THE SENSORS OR THE PLASTIC HOUSING OF SENSORS. HOPE THIS HELPS DALE [email protected]
