Exclamation can a probe gt perform?

Ive been researching cars lately because i will be buying one in a few months. i have a few in mind. most of the cars i want all are costly for maintenence, so don't tell me the mechanical problems because i know. What i want to know is what type of performance does a probe gt has. what year is the best? is it fast. is it sporty. currently ive been looking at second gen rx7's, 944's, probe gt's, supra's, and mr2's. What do you think. ive been to many forums and everyone says their car has a 10/10 performance, but that has to be a load of crap unless it's a ferrari or something. anyways, does the probe gt handle well? what are the year to year differences. can it set you back in your seat? What makes the probe worth buying?

The Probe GT (PGT) is more of a handling car than a drag race type car. It has about 135-140 whp (wheel horsepower) stock and with all normally aspirated bolt-ons you can get it up to about 160 whp. A J-spec engine (KLZE) is available from the Japanese market Mazda MX6 which is a direct drop in and is rated (in Japan) at 197 hp. On average it will get 165-170 whp without bolt-ons and about 185-195 whp with bolt-ons. The power gains with bolt-ons are kind of disappointing.

Typical stock 1/4 mi times will get you between 15.5-16.0s. With all N/A bolt-ons you are looking at low 14's with a good driver. N2O or Turbo will get you into the 13's with traction being the greatest limitation given it's FWD setup. A few have gotten their 2nd gen PGT into the 12's, but that is with slicks and some power adder (S/C, Turbo, N2O). The best N/A 1/4 mile time for an MX6 (same engine/chassis but different shell) would be 13.59@100 mph

On the track, a PGT drives very well (with some handling mods-struts/springs/rear antisway bar) and holds off seemingly more superior cars. In stock trim, the car has your typical stock understeer found on all cars designed for the street but still handles quite well.

The best year to get would be a '95 PGT since it is still OBD-I (simple emissions and sensor package), redesigned tail and interior, addition of the passenger side airbag, and the a lot of the bugs have been ironed out (siezing rear calipers, failing distributors, less rattles). '96-'97's are great too, but you just have to get around the extra sensors and mod some of the bolt ons that are available in order to make them fit properly or accomodate the additional sensors (like O2 sensors).

If you are looking for pure power for the 1/4 mile, I'd look towards some light RWD car with a stock turbocharger since you can usually get a lot more bang for your buck with any mods that you add on.

I'd also suggest a '93-'97 Mazda MX6 LS since it's the same car with a different body, but it looks like you are going for cars with flip up lights.

One major reason to buy a PGT, is the surprisingly huge following it still has on the internet ( www.probetalk.com ). Also, there have been some recent renewal in its aftermarket parts.

u forgot about the 1st gens, the 1st gens are more of a racer, they are quick in a straight line, but stock arent the best handlers. but they alot easier to get into the 12's then the 2nd gens.

Oops, yeah I forgot, I'm 2nd gen biased. 1st gens are faster when fully modded than 2nd gens. There is one 1st gen running 11's on Probetalk and another running mid 12's.

Re: can a probe gt perform?

dont worry, im 1st gen biased, cept ive been thinking baout a 2nd gen just cause they handle so much nicer.
and theres alot more then just one 1st gen running 12's, my 88 mx6 high 12 easily, and my quickest on slicks was 12.52. even though both my probes are only in the 14's

Thumbs up 90 GT vs. 94 GT

yea i have a 90 PGT and i raced my friend in his 94 PGT on back roads and i out accelerated and out handled him quite nicely so if your looking for a GT get a 90 it was the best first gen. model

I have GOT to beg to differ, out handle??? NO NO NO
Out Accelorate?? Again, negative, close, but negative, I wore old probes out. Every aspect of the game man. The only time I got completely wasted was when some Dude in this probe has some turbo work done and some suspention mods, and he lost me around every turn and straight. But besides that keep dreaming.

No dude im sorry but we raced again 40 mph side by side start and there was no contest he got a little jump on my but as soon as i spooled up i was about 2 car lengths ahead of him. handling...figured that one out too i didnt realize it untill we sat the cars next to each other and we realized that the previous owner of my 90 did a lowering kit on it plus i did some research and found out i have a wider tire than stock on my car so yea some minor descrepancys in my post but still MY 90 is better than a 94

You were going 40 and your turbo wasn't even spooled up?? Hmmmm... And again your wrong man...something has GOT to be wrong with that guys car and/or driving. They don't improve cars and make them slower. But to be totally biased...raced plenty of them only lost to one....turth...do what you want with it...

Re: can a probe gt perform?

Ok, Im a girl, and from a girls perspective, I would much rather perfer riding in a 2nd Gen Probe over a 1st Gen any day of the week. Just think, on the 2nd gen Probes you could put twin turbos on it, instead of the stock 1st gen 4cyl turbo. The old school probes are outdated, the 2nd gen probe still looks better than most cars today. I have a 97 GTS, Ive already beat 1st gen probe GTs with my stock probe. But I still love all probes, just 2nd gens are way better.

probe

well having owned a 96 2.5V6 for the past 2 and a half years i can safely say of all those cars you mentioned, the probe is the slowest and the second best on fuel econamy (after the mr2), proberly one of the more reliable though, mines only had new front tyres, new boot strutts, and new headlight and inside boot bulbs in the time i have had it!

Re: can a probe gt perform?

a stock GT Probe 5spd can fun 15s at the track, mine isnt stock. Ive beat a 3000 GT with Turbo, 1st Gen Probes, Honda Civics with they're "B16"s and "H22"s, but not only do I race, I go to car shows too. I only race someone so they'll shut up about they're slow ass cars. I love my Probe, I baby it all the time, its the best car Ive ever had, and one of the fastest where I live.
