Radio Shack has one, and the price is quite reasonable.

They are on Sale!

I have the Radio Shack one. I have been very happy with mine. It is also a great time to buy one since they are on sale:

Check out: www.RadioShack.com

I wonder if Radio Shack's mobile unit will work well with my Motorolla... I had problems with reception between the free Cobra FRS I got from Nissan and my SLK280.

Thumbs up Motorola/Radio Shack compatibility

The Radio Shack 21-1850 Mobile FRS Radio communicates very well with Motorola FRS units. This rig is a steal at $40.00! Less than half price.

Radio Shack, Cobra

It has been my experience that SOME Cobra's do not 'play well' with other brands.

I have the Radio Shack magnetic mount FRS. The antenna and the transmitter is in the magnetic roof mount. The handset is the control and microphone/speaker. Works well for me. Might add some distance but I have never ran any tests. About $80 as I recall

Radio Shack 21-1850 Mobile FRS

The Radio Shack 21-1850 Mobile FRS radio definitely transmits further than hand held units operated inside a vehicle. I'm the only member of XTC-HI with this radio, which sometimes causes communication problems for me. Other people can hear my transmissions clearly over distances of up to six miles (line of sight), but I can't hear theirs. Folks with radios located between me and the person I'm transmitting to, have to tell me what they are saying. Now that these radios are only $40.00, hopefully I can convince a few other club members to purchase this unit. Actually, at that price, I think I'll get another one and just loan it out during our outings.

On our larger trips we have people relay messages. The last time (24-26 trucks I belive) required about 4 relays to get to the back of the pack.

BTW. Welcome our Hawaiian contingent to the board! :jump:

Coming to a town near you...

Glad to be here, Schlud. This looks like a classy board, which does not surprise me considering your involvement.

BTW, I'll be in your neighborhood next month. My wife and I are spending Christmas with my nephew in Bellevue. Actually, I'm not a stranger to the Seattle area and used to own some property in Carnation years ago.

If you're going to be here a few days and have some time, we should meet you for beer and pizza (note the order!).

Fabulous! We are arriving at Sea-Tac on Dec 22, but my wife and I have family obligations through Dec. 25. Dec. 26 through Jan. 2, I'm ready for beer and pizza, in that order. Hope we can get together, Chuck H, and thanks for invitation.

Yes. I second that. Give us a heads up and we can have a few tasty pints of microwbrew.

(P.S. I sent you a Private Message. Since you're new here, it's in your "profile" section at the top of the browser)

Modified FRS

The Radio Shack FRS works great but I was unable to find a good place to hang the MIC. I ended up cutting and hard wiring the unit to the Xterra. It was a lot of work soldering 32 separate connections and running 135 feet (9, 15 feet extensions) of wire. But it looks great! I'll post some pictures a bit later.

Pictures...

Here is a photo showing where the hand receiver is mounted:

The antenna runs inside my altered light bar and down the passenger side of the "B" pillar:

The modification is probably more work than most are willing to do just to hide a few wires. But, if you’re interested in how it's done just e-mail me anytime.
