89 Civic Manual Tran Question

Trying to get it ready to sell...

I've noticed over the past several months that the car has a hard time being put in 1st gear, especially when it's cold. I can usually get it dropped into gear if I double clutch and/or try to do a shift into reverse first and then try for first gear again.

Problem seems to be getting progressively worse. Could this be anything simple like not enough transmission fluid?

Anyone have any advice or ideas? Thanks.

Re: 89 Civic Manual Tran Question

I don't know if it's the same thing or not, but my car is the same way. It's a lot harder to put it into 1st, but it's so you don't downshift into 1st when you mean to put it in 3rd. Is it like that when you are at a complete stop or just when you're slowing down? For me it will go into 1st a little easier when I'm at like 5-10 mph but anything above that, it's a bitch to get it in. But i definently don't think it's low tranny fluid since it doesn't happen in all gears.

Re: 89 Civic Manual Tran Question

i hate the fuckin safety features in the gears. you cant get into 1st or reverse easily, making driving a complete bitch sometimes, like in tight parkinglots. and having no power steering at the same time, wow, makes you sure look like a retard. i think that if someone is stupid enough to shift into reverse or 1st while they're at speed, they likely deserve it. i hate the inconvenience, sometimes it takes me forever to get into reverse, and you gotta put it into other gears first. and sometimes it goes kinda half way into first....... wow, good topic, i really hate that too. the 'safety' gears should be optional or something..

Re: 89 Civic Manual Tran Question

I always thought my transmission was fuxxed when I had to nearly brake the damn thing to get it into 1st when I was slowing down.

Re: 89 Civic Manual Tran Question

i know man, its retarded, it only pops in when im half a second from being at a dead stop, but you can start in 2nd if you really need to if your 1st is giving you shit at a light or something.

my trans is kinda rough sometimes in the low gears too, it seems to only be affecting what i feel in the shifter, and not the engine or gears or anything.

i've always wondered if my tranny is messed up, but it only has 68 000 original kms on it, and its in really great shape, so i dont know.

Re: 89 Civic Manual Tran Question

Yep, and the tranny sucks when you wake up at 6 in the morning and get in your car to go to school and it does nothing but shudder through 2nd or 3rd gear.

Re: 89 Civic Manual Tran Question

A good trick for the reverse thing is to let the car roll back a tiny bit and then it should go into gear fine. I have to do it a few times a week and it's always worked. But I understand why it's done that way. I've seen too many videos of jackasses trying to upshift while racing and end up downshifting into 1st, their car gets messed up to say the least. And imaging trying to shift from 3rd to 4th and going into reverse by mistake...f u c t. Though anyone who shifts into reverse while driving is stupid and deserves what they get, I have to jam the shifter over to even find reverse.

Re: 89 Civic Manual Tran Question

i can agree with you somewhat. but shifting from 3rd to 4th, thats straight back, if you cant pull one of those off, dont try to speed-shift, or accept the fact that you're gonna make your engine shit.

i wish smart people who know how to shift could just remove the features to prevent idiots from damaging their cars, it shouldnt inconvenience everyone. it's like making everyone wear helmets cuz some people fall down. it doesnt make sense to apply where it's neither needed nor wanted.

maybe im alone on this, but i just really hate how it affects my driving. there should be a different system that prevents stupid people from shifting wrong... oh wait, its called automatic transmission!
