2.4L water pump, My turn to ask a question...LOL
OK guys,
I just got the car back again from Midas, I was getting a nasty rattle from the exhaust, but any wayone of the techs. said that he was under the car and happened to look up at the water pump and noticed the seal was seeping. I know that I don't have to rush for the repair, however I don't want to wait too long and risk more damage. So my question is this: Has any one changed a water pump on a 96 GAGT 2.4L? and if so, please foll me in on any time savers and tips, I'm going to review the Haynes manual soon, but I know that there are always things left out of the instructions. Any Input is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Hoags |

Re: 2.4L water pump, My turn to ask a question...LOL
Hiya Hoags, never pulled one.
but I'm giving ya the Chilton's way, whcih combined with your Haynes way may help ya save a few minutes [I hope] First of all, it seems more involved than it should be, and maybe someone who's already pulled one can shorten the path for ya. 1] Drain coolant 2] disconnect O2 sensor wiring 3] Remove upper exhaust manifold heat shield 4] It says to raise and support front end of vehicle. 5] Remove exhaust manifold brace bolt 6] unbolt and remove lower exhaust manifold heat shield 7] Loosen manifold-to-exhaust pipe spring-loaded nuts {now that sounds like fun, huh?} 8] Unbolt radiator assmbly. outlet pipe from from water pump cover 9] Pull the exhaust pipe from the manifold. 10] Move exhaust pipe for needed clearance 11] Separate radiator outlet pipe from oil pan and transaxle Wait it gets worse, lol 12] leave lower radiator hose attached, pull down on outlet pipe to detach from the pump. Let the pipe hang. 13] pull the exhaust mainfold 14] pull the timing chain cover 15] pull the timing chain tensioner. Now ya can finally pull the pump, YAY!!!!! Sheesh. Looks like five bolts on the pump cover, three nuts holding all of the thing to the engine 16] Extract the pump assembly-to-timing chain housing nuts 17] remove pump and cover assbly. 18]Separate pump from cover. Oh, for the days of loosening 2 ring clamps, pulling two hoses, removing one silly belt, and three bolts only, sigh. |

Re: 2.4L water pump, My turn to ask a question...LOL
I just want to pull the water pump, I don't want to rebuild that half of the engine. There's more steps than the Washington monument. That's just NUTS!
Knife, I'm with you Two hoses, one belt and three bolts. The good old day's pretty much long gone I guess. Thanks for the run down I appreciate your efforts to type out the info. Like you say between the Chilton and Haynes it looks like I should be able to pull it off [no pun intended]. I'll finish reading the Haynes and maybe bounce some things off you if you don't mind. Thanks Dan |

Np, Dan, ask away. And maybe someone who's done a pump will jump in with a less-involved way.
