I have a problem that everyone is scratching their head about.I have a 1993 pontiac grand am SE ...the prob is that when I take the car out on the highway or over 45 miles per hour when slowing or stopping it stalls and then dies..sometimes dont restart..have to wait about 30 minutes before it will start again.I have changed the plug wires and plugs changed everything like the breather but still no luck..ive been told it could be an o2 sensor but never shows engine service light..If anyone could shed some light on this it would be a great help..thanks for your time

Re: 1993 potiac grand am SE
Have the plastic housing that the plug wires connect to and holds the coil packs. Sometimes if they are cracked the car will run fine but when the engine gets hot enough the plastic expands and the crack will enlarge to the point where contacts are interuptedand the car stalls, put after a while the engine cools the crack returns to normal. there may even be a pinched wire that associated with the coil packs or ignition module and when it get hot enough to cause a grounding short, and also returns to normal after it cools.
This it just a thought, others on the forum may have more insight. |

Re: 1993 potiac grand am SE
I kind of go with Hoag about the coil pack right now, I've seen that fix the problem before in this forum.
The O2 sensor seems to have two of them, check out kallenbach's thread re O2 sensor. That is one actually two other possibles. |

Crankshaft position sensor
I was having a similar problem on my '93 SE where the car would often stall when slowing down from lower speeds, such as in traffic, and it would not restart for 15-30 minutes. I replaced the coil packs and coil housing since that is the likely problem and it did not help. A pontiac mechanic suggested replacing the Crankshaft Position Sensor. I replaced it and hadn't had a problem since.
Be careful! My sensor was very brittle and broke off in the engine block. I had to very carefully drill it out to avoid getting little magnetic metal pieces in the engine. |
