Stalling> I think The fuel pump shuts off randomly
I have a 1995 olds cutlass ciera, I think My problem is with the fuel pump. I was wondering if anyone could tell how hard of a job is the fuel pump to replace. Is the fuel pump in the gas Tank? or some where else? Not sure on this model.

Re: Stalling> I think The fuel pump shuts off randomly
How do you figure out that the problem is the fuel pump?
Anyway, more than likely your fuel pump is inside the fuel tank. Have water hose ready and fire extinguisher. You need to disconnect the fuel filter. Put a gas can on the disconnected fuel hose coming from the gas tank. You can turn the ignition switch to ON (not start) and the fuel pump should pump any remaining fuel (slow). Turn the ignition to OFF when the gas can is full and repeat as necessary until all fuel is removed. You can then loosen the clamp on the filler tube to the gas tank. Loosen the strap holding the gas tank and slowly lower down the gas tank. Disconnect the electrical wire. Move the gas tank away from the vehicle and move it to a clear space. Remove the top round cover on the gas tank and remove the fuel pump. I would remove the remain fuel and clean any debris inside the gas tank. Installation is the reverse. |

Because the fuel pumb hums lightly and I can hear it stop humming and the within a couple seconds the cars stalls. But it will start back up? So I am thinking the pump is on the way out. Do you agree or not?

Re: Stalling> I think The fuel pump shuts off randomly
You can verify the fuel pressure using a fuel pressure gauge on the schrader valve near the fuel rail.
Did you try replacing the fuel filter first and see if that makes a difference and besides the fuel filter needs to be replaced anyway if you have not replaced it for a long time. |

Re: Stalling> I think The fuel pump shuts off randomly
Don't jump to the conclusions that the fuel pump is at fault. If you have enough pressure at the fuel rails then it's something else (even the oil sending unit can cut off your fuel). As Slade said, check the fuel pressure first then tell us if this is the problem. If you come up with a low fuel pressure, it's either the pump or the fuel filter. If the preesure is within specifications, then you have to look for the problem somewhere else (either a faulty engine management system or a wire).

Re: Stalling> I think The fuel pump shuts off randomly
tap on your MAF with screwdriver while car is idling if car kills while doing that there ya go. (sounds crazy but I thought my fuel pump was going bad till I discovered my car was quitting due to bad MAF) I know cieras and I would start there. Keep in mind CPS sensor can also cause intermittent stalling. I would say If you hear your fuel pump humming its good to go usually when they quit you hear no humming. If MAF and CPS check out then test your fuel pressure. If no fuel pressure see if your 3.1's oil pressure sensor is also a fuel pump cutoff switch like my 3300 is, as thats only a $30 repair but its not very easy access. Also make sure your underhood fuel pump fuse is good no broken wire bad fuse. If all else fails yes your fuel pump is inside your fuel tank, you might as well get new straps and bolts too.

I am having the same problem with my '94 Cutty Supreme. I need to do the same thing but was wondering if this car has a fuel relay of any kind.
