Unhappy 95 taurus doesn't go faster than 5mph

It drives up to 5 than it goes back to 0mph. As long as you stay under 5 it runs. A few people told me to change the tranny fluid and filter and it would be fine, while others said it could be the tourque converter. Please help!

Does it die when you reach 5 mph? Or does the transmission feel like it slips and then coasts untill it stops?

When it goes to shift out of first, the engine reves up and coast, and no longer accelerate. Then when I stop I can accelerate again as long as I stay in first. It also goes in reverse.

Well...This doesn't sound to me like something a fluid replacement is going to fix.

What do you think it would be?
