88 accord just dumped all the oil

So I just joined this group and I just bought my 88 accord a week ago. Well, I started it yesterday and drove down the road. The oil light came on. So I got gas and put oil in it. I drove home and the oil light came on again, then it wouldn't shift (automatic) then it just died. I put it in neutral and was able to start it again and it ran long enough to get off the road, then died and wouldn't start, just cranked. So I got a ride home and found that my driveway was full of oil.
I read a couple of old posts about the rear gasket or something or maybe an o-ring at the filter? Anyway, not sure where to start looking for the problem once I get it towed home. If it's the rear seal whatever... is it worth paying the money to yank the tranny, etc to fix it? Or did I just buy myself a lot of trouble?
Thanks for any help.

If you haven't locked the motor, I'd go keep dumping oil into it to get it home and see where it is leaking from. With a general idea we might be able to offer a little more advice.

Re: 88 accord just dumped all the oil

Not sure about that year, I know the newer ones have a seal on the oil pump drive under the timing cover that blows sometimes and releases massive amounts of oil, but it is a (relatively) easy fix, nothing internal, just like doing a timing belt change (which you'll have to do if that's what happened) with an extra seal to be pried out and pressed in place.

Well, I towed it home last night, cleaned it up today and ran a quart of oil thru it, literally... Seems to be coming from the base of the oil filter. From what I've read, I'm thinking it's the oil filter base seal. So, I'm looking around to see if I can find good directions on how to fix it. Seems easy from what I've read, 4 little bolts to remove base from block, etc... but of course it's one of those annoying places you can't quite see, you have to do by feel... just my luck!

Ha, that applies to the majority of the honda engine!

Best of luck!

On some Hondas there is a O ring between the base and the block. By the O ring from the dealer then tackle removing and replacing the O ring. You can look at the parts breakdown and get an idea on how to replace it. On the later models, you remove the base by removing the nipple that the filter screws onto.
